Its was kates birthday last Monday so we decided to go to 5 cafes yesterday morning to celebrate. I planned it all out on a google map cause I'm a geek and then we caught the 6.40 train into the city.
First stop was the Depot in the Valley for breakfast as I'd read somewhere they were good, and they were.
You can see the Barista at work and the kitchen in the background. I really liked the open feel with the bar and they had great service too.
I decided I was just going to drink latte's today so I could compare them. It was good, but I expected better. More like a flat white in a taller cup.
Then came my breakfast and I gotta say its one of the best I've ever had, cooked perfectly, loved the bread and everything had a really good quality and taste to it.
Next stop - Merlo in the Valley
We walked back to Merlos roasting place in the valley where they only serve takeaway coffee. I didn't get a shot of the place but did get this one of Kate with her Coffee. It was good, 2nd best coffee of the day and the cheapest too. They also have a good selection of machines and gave us good service which was nice. From here we walked back to the train station and caught the next one to central.
Cafe no.3 - Brother Espresso
We decided to go to the furthest cafe from the station first and then work our way back. I saw a couple of cafes walking down Edward St that looked good, one had a sign out the front advertising their all organic coffee and also said "any coffee, any size for $2.50". The other was called Cafe 58 degrees I think and the inside looked nice. Maybe next time.
Arriving at Brother Espresso we got a good hello and I really liked the design of the inside here. You can see the guys making our coffee here.

Coffee wise, it wasn't great. I expected it to be alot better and I think I just got a bad one, Kate's was too hot also. Saying that though, this place is defiantly worth checking out and I will be back.
4th stop - Spoon Espresso
Spoon, not sure if I liked it or not. The coffee was good but not amazing, same as the service and the atmosphere. Just not my kind of place for some reason but worth a look if your walking past. Coffee pic with Kates Cappa in the background -
Last stop - Naked Coffee
This was the best, coffee wise. Naked Coffee was the best coffee of the the day by far, only the Merlo came close. Service was good and I love watching them extract the shot on the screen. Also the only coffee that came with some art on it.
If I had to rate the coffee I would say looks count, Naked looked and was the best, Merlo 2nd and then the other 3 were pretty close together but still a fair bit behind the first 2. None of these places were at all bad though, I picked them out because I knew they were good.
Fun morning and we were home for lunch, i recommend it.
