J.R. Rund is an up and coming singer/songwriter who crafts songs in the vein of such prolific artists as Tom Petty and Ryan Adams. His songs are structured around a classic pop formula, but infused with a country, soul, and gospel sensibility. His commitment in structuring the particular arrangements of the instruments, and the heartbreaking harmonies with guest background singer Anna McBath reflects a careful attention to detail that works in crafting a solid piece of music.
Of course the songs themselves wouldn't be the same if there wasn't a backing band capable of keeping the parts fitting together. They play with a focused energy that oozes with charisma, professionalism, and self confidence. Their ability to lock into a southern groove is second to none, and provides each song with just the right amount of swagger. With Wilfred Cuthbert providing pedal steel, and Jon Meek playing the organ and keys, each song is accented with a soulfulness that would make any gospel musician curse in envy.
The self titled E.P. is a collection of concise, adept, and skillful music that still manages to keep an underlying, improvisational quality to it. It's full of boozy moments and a pronounced, southern influence. The songs lend themselves to the aesthetic of a late night jam session that appropriately, doesn't end until the sun rises the next morning, or the alcohol and the heartbreak have run out.
