These sections always throw me. How do I describe myself to the masses?
I spent my early years in a suburb of Cleveland, OH. Everything was pretty black and white to me as a youngster. Even when my dad split right after my mom had my little brother, bad was still bad and good was still good. Dad was firmly in the bad category. So, I went to church like a good little girl and made straight As to make my mom happy. Then we moved to Tennessee.
Suddenly, some shades of gray started invading my life. I found out my mom was the one to blame for the split and my little brother wasn't my full brother. Shocker for any 11 year old, I'm sure. :) I was also the new kid in the last year of elementary school and, of course, going through that dreaded awkward stage. Not only was I angry with my mom, but I had no friends at school for that whole first year we lived in the backwoods state of Tennessee.
Seventh grade starts and I meet Natalie. She was and has been my best friend since 7th grade math class. We've been through boyfriends, a husband (hers), knock-down (literally) drag-out fights, drunken debauchery, road trips, many tears, much laughter, living in different countries, and all those things best friends go through. My friendship with her has shaped a lot of what I've become: a happy-go-lucky geeky girl next door with a penchant for reading romance novels and laughing at spilt milk.
The last year of my life has really tested my ability to come out of things with my light-hearted attitude still in tact, but I'm working on putting the pieces back together and get that smile back on my face.
