Tr8or field-test1

First field test of my homebrew joystick-controled sequencer running on my laptop.

Sequencer code is all in ChucK which is controlling the Nord Modular for bass and lead sounds over MIDI. The joystick I use is a Saulabi arcade stick through a PS2 to USB converter, I also use a Konami Beatmania (PS1, European version) controler. All songs start from scratch; A set of beats and two melodic sounds and completely empty patterns. No graphical feedback or interface is used at all.

It's quite dark and musically it's quite rough but as a first field-test it was quite satisfactory. Low tables suck.

Thanks to Esther for the video

WHAT?

Ok, it's like this.

Take a laptop, project the schreen for the audience to see using a beamer and hook it up to a PA.

Then, very quickly, start programing and write a small program that makes some sound, preferably music ;-). Make this simple program run, then modify it or add to it, all in realtime, all in front of the audience.

Yes, that's nerdy. This is where Marcel comes in. Marcel organises these evenings and made it into a competition. Two competitors code for 6 minurtes exactly after which we make the whole thing crash intentionally. 6 minutes is quite short.... After a round of this the audience votes for who won, by applauding.

I'll be coding ChucK, the little language in which i also wrote my sequencer, I think everybody else is using MAX/MSP.

There will probably also be other stuff going on that night, last time they took a volunteer from the audience and shaved his head (using a trimmer rigged with a contact mike) while he had to sing and play guitar. There were also more normal musical performances.

These things are free (at least last one was) but it's a good idea to be early as seats are limited and the close the door.
