About

KHURUKSETRA is an Indonesian experimental/drone group in the vein of The extreme Javanese performing Arts and The Bharatayudha War. Khuruksetra originally started as a duo collaboration between two Film & Audio Productions students, Danif Pradana (Kalimayat) and Mikael Mirdad (ex-Whisperdesire), who were seeking for a radical sound performance concept which borrowed the method of "prepared instruments" by Keith Rowe, Otomo Yoshihide, John Cage and others Avant Garde Music composers. The first goal of the project is to create an extreme sonic assault jam session where they considered it as "Jazz meet Noise". However, instead of achieving a catastrophic performance, both of them end up by achieving a dark and transcendental sound that evoke more claustrophobic sound experience. They soon agreed to form a group called "KHURUKSETRA" which is a name taken from the legendary battlefield in the Hindu epic war, "Bharatayudha". The project is also agree to be a personal tribute for Keith Rowe and John Cage. Later on, they decided to involve their friend, Andra Fembriarto, who is a filmmaker, theater artist, dancer and poet, to join the group in order to bring the project into a more darker stage by incorporating some elements of mysticism and some extreme Javanese traditional performing arts. The presence of Andra within the group, lead the sound of Khuruksetra to reach a more extreme level of creepiness since he often transform into another stage persona while performing with the group. Meanwhile, a Sydney based musician, Enrico Utomo, join the group which finally complete the missing puzzle of the group by bringing the sound of Khuruksetra more into its subsonic possibilities.

Through the years, Khuruksetra has not only been involve in a regular music performances, but also in Theatre, Film scoring, and Media Arts Project. They've been working with different dancers, filmmakers, musicians, and also media artists to expand their horizon of sound. They are not only a "Live Performance" based group, but they are also a prolific group who spend their time in the studio to work with different conceptual works of sound and visual. Some of its work has been presented as a podcast, video art, and also 5.1 surround sound installation project.
