I wanted to blog this yesterday, but it was the day of blog silence day for the VT students.
On Saturday afternoon we packed up some toys, the dog, and the kids and went to the park. The weather was great and it was just totally packed! Poor Cody had brought his basketball with him but was unable to play because all the big kids were on the court and there was just no room for a 9 year old boy.
Not a big problem.. we just sent him and his brother to play on the slides while we played with the dog and I took a few pictures.
After a while we decided to walk down to the pond to check out the ducks, and since we were walking past the parkinglot I thought it would be a good idea to pack up the basketball since he wasn't using it.
Me: Cody, take these keys, put the ball in the car, lock the door, and watch out for cars
Cody: Ok! (running off)
About 5 minutes later I look across the pond and see Cody coming back with his basketball.
As soon as I saw that look of satisfaction on his face.. I knew EXACTLY what he had done.
Me: CODY! WHERE ARE THE KEYS??
Cody: They're in the car!
Me: Did you lock the door?
Cody: Yep! Just like you said mom!
Me: !!!!!!!!??????
So basically, we had: Me with my 70-200MM IS lens (very heavy when attached to a DSLR with a battery grip), the basketball, a chew toy and a frisbee for the dog, two boys, and a puppy... all walking back to our house to get the spare keys and another car. The walk was about 2 miles with no sidewalks and lets just say... it sucked!
So.. I wont be letting Cody handle the car keys any time soon. The thing that made me laugh about what he did is how he was just so unaware that what he did was a problem. It did not register to him that by locking the keys in the car, you cannot unlock the door anymore. He was just so happy because he thought he had done me a favor.
Even weirder? When I told my mom this story, she said my brother also locked the keys in their car last weekend. So I don't feel so bad because we're not the only ones.
