When two US-Americans meet in an Austrian elementary school, it might not be something that happens every day, but it's also nothing extraordinary. If this encounter turns into a close friendship, especially when years later, after a short stay in the USA, they return to Austria to start a band, then it was fate or coincidence, depending on how you want to look at it, that they ever found each other. And that really is something special, just as the band Lehnen is something special.
The two young men, who have been connected since they learned to tie their shoes, are Joel Boyd (vocals, guitar, organ) and Matthew Prokop (drums, keyboard). In the summer of 2005 they brought Lehnen into existence, which had at first a very difficult start being limited to only two people. Together one is less alone, one could say, but when two people are joined by two more, a collective goal appears to be a lot closer. With Stefan Sieder (bass, accordion, vocals) and Martin Konvicka (guitar, keyboard, synthesizer, vocals) the mix is complete; song-skeletons are given more and more tissue transforming the shine and splendor into a finished song.
Loudness next to tranquility: Opposites find their way together here, and through the many expanded classic rock line-up elements, find their way into the big picture. Conservative electronics and synthesizers play as important of a roll as accordion or glockenspiel, not to mention the often multi-layered vocals. It can give one goose-bumps, when in a mix of euphoria and desperation lines like "I'm alright" or "Get back where you started from" are sent out into the world.
"This Could Be Our Dream Home" - with the title of their first album Lehnen proclaim what their music is capable of: namely to allow the listener to forget the borders between dreams and reality, inebriation and sobriety. "Diverse" is a word that frequents the subconscious while listening to Lehnen; something that is due, no doubt, to the eclectic listening tendencies of the four band members: from Post-Rock and Post-Hardcore (Joel), to a variety of electronic music (Matthew), all the way to classic Indie-Rock (Stefan) and Folk (Martin), which in the end adds up to a sum that is worth more than each of the individual parts.
Boyd sings "There must be so much more" in "Ashes and the Stones". In the music of Lehnen one finds exactly that.
