Long long ago, back when the world was young--that is, sometime around the year 2006, two individuals of musi-artistic temperament were summoned to the mountainous regions of the north. It was here, while enduring not only the harsh climes, but also bear, elk, and T-rex attacks on a regular basis, a voice of a sub-sub-genre of musical art was forged. This was not, however, without precedent. A seed had been planted and events had been set in motion naught but one year earlier when Mary-Anne and Daniel had joined forces to unleash upon the world the destructive energies of their combined powers in the form of a rock-opera (yet to be completed.) And so,in the majestic Southern Continental Ranges of the Canadian Rockies, it was only a matter of time before the the two intrepid heroes united once again, this time as the Cedar Tavern Singers AKA The Phonoréalistes to fight the good fight and to sing the good song (and occasionally the bad song.)

We are available for art history lectures, birthday parties, and black-tie galas.

Mary-Anne:

The fall is looking damn busy for the Cedar Tavern Singers:

JETTY! a radio drama by The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes, will premier on www.radio90.fm on Friday, September 5 at 5pm. JETTY! is playing as part of the Banff Centre's "Radio Free Banff" series. JETTY! is an exciting and musical tale of adventure voiced entirely by The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA Les Phonoréalistes.

The Cedar Tavern Singers' exhibition "Art Snob Solutions, Phase II: The Age of Mechanical Reproduction" will open at Stride Gallery in Calgary on October 10 at 8pm, running to November 8.

We are also going to be included in the Centre de recherche urbaine de Montreal's Petite Enveloppe Urbaine project- "How to Become a Genius", which will be a part of Calgary's Artcity Festival in September. More information on the petite enveloppe project: www.crum.ca

And, as if that was not enough, we will be kicking off ACAD's new student orientation on September 2nd with a rousing musical performance, which we hope will prepare them for what to expect from art school and art in general. It's not too late to change careers, guys and gals!

"A Work of Art that Uses the Idea of Halifax"
So we just recorded a new CD for Halifax's eyelevel gallery, for their Reshelving Initiative. Four tracks, all about NSCAD and the Halifax art scene. If you have ever wanted to be able to recite, in song, all the nominees and winners of the Sobey Award 2002-2007, this may be for you, hot diggity-dog.

Mary-Anne:

Well, Art's 1,000,045th birthday came and went last month, and we accosted various individuals in the Art Department with our singing. We wrote two new songs for the occasion- find them on our website.

Art said, "Why didn't you practice those songs more before you tried to play them in public?" but we could tell it was touched.

Mary-Anne:

Thanks to everyone who attended our Art Now lecture on the 30th. We promise not to go over 50 minutes next time, if there is a next time. For those who missed the last few minutes it was basically the same as what you'd witnessed for the first 50 minutes, with probably just as many Baldessari and Smithson references.

Unfortunately Dan feels he has spread some misinformation, and offers a profuse apology along with corrections to the erroneous info, which you can find on our official website blog.

Thanks to Doctor Carol Williams and Professor Don Gill, of the University of Lethbridge, for lending us their awesome video of the Spiral Jetty- they weren't properly credited during the lecture.

Contest Update

Ryan Doherty has correctly identified the artists and videos in our CD giveaway contest! No doubt he is waiting with baited breath to receive his grand prize.

But there are still 4 CDs to give away!

So here is a strategy for those who are not so well-versed in the murky depths of 1970s conceptual videos, and who dearly want a CD but just as dearly do not want to fork over $15:
1. watch "Art is All Over"
2. pick a scene from it
3. find someone who knows video art, and imagine the following exchange:
You: Hey, how's it going?
Them: Fine, thanks.
You: I've been meaning to ask you something.
Them: Is that so?
You: Yes, I know you know a lot about this kind of thing, so I was wondering if you could tell me, who is it again, who is that artist who did the video with the finger and the stick?
Them: Which one?
You (acting it out with your finger, and possibly a stick if you have one): You know, the one that goes like this, between the finger and the stick. I, uh, can't remember who that was.
Them: Oh! Ha, ha, that's one of my favorites! That's (NAME WITHHELD).
You: Thanks!
4. repeat step three with the other videos
