About

I'm the writer of Living Lost, published by the Garrett County Press, purveyors of fine written stuff at select locations everywhere. I also write a regular blog/column for Powell's Books after each new episode of Lost. That blog is about the literary, historical, philosophical and narrative connections about the previous night's episode. I'm also working, glacially, towards my PhD in English at the University of Virginia, and am a wannabe tech geek.

Powell's Books Lost blog: Through the Looking Glass

This is it - this year's final Powell's Books Lost blog post, written for the third season finale. The episode was a mindbender, pulling together threads from previous episodes and previous seasons, knotting them up, and leaving new ends of narrative trails to follow. …

Powell's Books Lost blog: Greatest Hits

The Powell's Books Lost blog post for "Greatest Hits" is up, and there's a lot more going on than meets the eye.

It looks like we have some evidence that every time Des saved Charlie, he not only changed the future, but the past and present as well. Because first …

Powell's Books Lost blog: The REAL Man Behind the Curtain

Now we've finally seen Jacob, and I've posted a column about it at my Powell's blog. The real question at this point is if Locke actually did or didn't see that strange old man.

The biblical overtones are getting interesting. In Genesis, Jacob gave Benjamin this …

Hi Wendy,

I'm sorry I didn't get back to your comment sooner; I've been teaching a mad summer school schedule, and just wrapped up (we fit a semester's worth of college in 5 weeks).

What I know about Cloverfield is that it's some sort of monster movie, and seems to have some possible connections to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulu mythology, but that's just hearsay. On the Ethan Haas stuff; apparently those connections were completely circumstantial, and some fake sites were set up to make a connection that didn't really exist. Abrams came out and said there was not connection, and the one thing these producers do is play fair; if they say there's no 'there' there, there isn't. Ethan Haas was an alternate reality game that's now done. Things like his cloverfield diaries, from what I saw, were just red herrings some overzealous fans put out on the interwebs.

It's interesting, though, because it shows a couple things -- how much the broader Lost community looks for element s of the mythos EVERYWHERE they can, and when they go wrong. Along with the Cloverfield digging, there was a question about a production sign that said "You Don't Mess With the Hanzo." The sign was stapled on a telephone pole or something in the middle of a city where a film was being shot. It was assumed this was the Cloverfield set, and Hanzo was a nod to Hanso.

"You Don't Mess With the Hanso" is an upcoming Adam Sandler film. No connection.

(Thanks for the compliment!)

hey - I'm just wondering...

I mean, I would pretty much consider you to be the only Lost expert I pay any attention to. So on this note, I've got a few questions for you.

Do you know anything about the J.J. Abrams movie coming out on January 18, 2008 - tagged as 01-18-08, or sometimes labeled "Cloverfield"?
Do you know who Ethan Haas is?
Do you know why Ethan Haas has something called "Cloverfield Diaries"?
Why was Ethan Haas right?
And why does Ethan Haas have a link to the Hanso Foundation on his website? (www.ethanhaas.org)
