for more information: www.lorenzomonni.com. Lorenzo Monni was born in Cagliari, on 2nd, March 1986 and spent his early childhood around Sassari countryside. At the age of 7, he moved to San Donà di Piave, a town near Venice sorrounded by cornfields and cement. When he was 8, he started playing the recorder, envious of his cousin, who was studying flute at middle school and successfully performed for the family. 2 years later the teacher advised Lorenzo to move to the cello. But he didn't find the new experience too inspiring, because he prefered playing songs by ear to practising with cello technique.At the age of 14, swept away by his newborn passion for rock music, Lorenzo dediced to give up classical studies and went into eletric guitar. When he was 15, he undertook a passionate and solitary study of the blends between classical and modern music. He begun to write his own songs, saving the sheet music in the computer thanks to an old notation programme for Windows 3.1. Meanwhile, he played with unsuccessful local bands. At the age of 18, after liceo scientifico qualification, he reistered at the faculty of electronic engineering, at the university of Trieste (at the moment he is at the third year). When he was 19, he bought a classical guitar and started to play it in fingerstyle. At the same time, his interest for eletronic music and personalization of sounds grew up. In 2007, after his 21st birthday, his first album was released, fully self- produced and written, with the title of "Death of future men". In the same year, he begun his collabotation with various budding musicians, such as Dunkelblau, eletronic duo he still plays with, and Superio, band he left in September 2007 after he had offered his contribution for their first demo disk. He has also collaborated with singer-songwriter Andrea Liuzza, who Lorenzo is going to work with in 2008 too.In February 2008 Lorenzo's second album, "Debris", produced between April 2007 and February 2008, was released. Debris is at first Total Music, is is a riddle, a maze of relics with no estabilished way-out. Merging prog-rock, electronica and a bit of classical music, its deep sound creates an evocatory aura which sets its apart from most of the other albums you've ever listened to." di Marco Sgrignoli. Il progressive, anche nei suoi più alti vertici, è spesso stato musica categorica in fatto di sensazioni evocate. L'artista era libero di spaziare con la fantasia, l'ascoltatore molto meno: il mood dei pezzi era sapientemente determinato a monte, per epico, decadente o fiabesco che potesse essere.Delle undici tracce di "Debris" colpisce invece questo: non impongono emozioni preordinate. Per quanto minuziosamente strutturate, restano aperte a percorsi sempre nuovi. Butterfly effect portato in musica: un battito d'ali di differenza e cambia il sentiero imboccato. Si invertono i rapporti, la luce diventa ombra; oppure tutto resta lo stesso, tranne per qualche dettaglio. Rovesciamento o doppelgänger? Non c'è modo di prevederlo.
L'immagine adatta per "Debris" è il labirinto, quello di Borges: un universo di androni sotterranei, colonne, fregi che ancora portano la memoria degli antichi fasti. Perdersi nell'infinità potenziale delle sue connessioni.È raro trovare in un album a suo modo "pop" una simile profondità di suono. "Iperproduzione" la chiamerebbe qualcuno, ma non renderebbe onore alla pienezza tridimensionale di queste stratificazioni strumentali. No, non è la classica ridondanza di chi non sa definire un'idea con pochi strumenti; è un affresco trecentesco, un dipinto di Brueghel: il fascino sta nella sua ricchezza, in quelle surreali compresenze che sarebbero bandite dal dogma prospettico. Ci si trova di tutto in "Debris", ma è difficile discernerne gli elementi, perché ognuno di essi si porta in evidenza solo in relazione a qualcun altro. Così si sposano elettronica (tanta, tantissima, anche dove non sembra), lacerazioni frippiane, un costante spaesamento sinfonico, echi di mellotron e Pink Floyd post-psichedelici. Debussy, percussionismo stravinskiano e una tensione strisciante, capace di tenere sempre in bilico, a un passo da quella magniloquenza che è sempre, miracolosamente, evitata."Debris" è l'opera seconda del giovane polistrumentista Lorenzo Monni ed è disponibile in download gratuito sul suo sito, indicato in testa alla recensione. L'album paga la sua complessità nel risultare di difficile presa su chi cerchi lo sbalordimento immediato, l'espediente mai sentito prima, la melodia che si pianta in testa e intima: "riascoltami".
