Madeline Wright

Madeline has been playing musical instruments and singing since she was a kid. Her first instruments were the xylophone and kazoo. She later moved to the piano at the age of 7. At 15, she received her first guitar and has been playing one and writing music since. Her sound is honest and her style is unique.

After a few weeks in the hot Nevada desert for a geology class, she returned to LA and wrote her first song. After playing it for a classmate who immediately asked to place it in his class project's documentary, "Pioche"-- a tongue-in-cheek rehashing of the field camp endeavor-- has become an audience favorite.

Since Madeline first ventured in front of a microphone at an open mic night in early 2005, she's gone on to play in front of many other microphones, endearing audiences in a variety of venues, including house concerts, UCLA, Unurban Coffeehouse, Synergy Cafes, Karma Coffeehouse, The Derby, and B.B. King's Blues Club at Universal Citywalk, in Hollywood, CA.

In Fall of 2007, Madeline made her debut on a local cable television show where she improvised the program's intro music on the spot as well as being the featured musical guest where she played a segment, did an interview, and closed the show with her original music.

In 2008, Madeline is armed with a significant repertoire of interesting melodies and lyrics ready to showcase. In March, she performed in the "Don't Call Us Tori" showcase in Hollywood, featuring a few of LA's best females singer-songwriters. In April and May she hosted Mikey Mondays, a biweekly open mic night in Santa Monica. She is working on releasing an EP and is seeking music placement for film and television projects.

And scene

“Thank you for sharing your world with me. Music is our lifeblood and I’ve always been impressed with your songs, talent and joy.”
–D. Kowal, director

As of today filming is officially over for a documentary about a group local L.A. musicians brought together by a love of playing live music every week as they struggle along the daily grind. It blends live music performances and their stories, displaying a glimpse into their respective journeys. It’s currently in post-production now and soon it’s off to the festival circuit.

I can’t wait to see it, even if I am in it. I have mixed feelings about it as my struggle is now in plain sight and I can’t help but feel exposed in a way I’ve never been.

The above note from the director reminds me of other kind words left on my site from February Album Writing Month which you can find here: fawm.org/fawmers/madeline

It reminds me of why I write my songs. Life experiences and memories, both happy and sad, written and set to music, makes my suitcase heart* fill up with the happy. I’m working hard every day to get a lot of these new songs ready to share.

*That’s a Weepies reference from their CD Say I Am You It’s on the last (and my favorite) track called “Slow Pony Home”.

Five things for which I’m thankful

1. My friends, family, having basic needs met, and everything I need to survive.
2. My job. Sure it’s got long hours and no vacation pay for me, but the people I work with are cool and they provide me with an old laptop (which is better than no laptop).
3. Weekends to play: music, hockey, the radio, just about whatever I can think of, I have the freedom to do. I treat this as a luxury.
4. My car: I’ve been all but neglecting its routine maintenance, not for lack of wanting. I just don’t have the $$$ to plunk down when the mechanic inevitably tries to up-sell me on some service that apparently my car will explode without on the drive home. It has been very good to me over the last year *knocks on wood* and for that I’m grateful.
5. Manageable debt. Okay, technically I owe one of my family members a boatload of money for helping me out earlier this year, and I have another who owes me, but outside of family debt I’d like to continue being debt-free as much as possible. It’s a good feeling. I just need to work on getting that savings level up!

Friday, July 31 Madeline @ Unurban Coffeehouse

First a little site maintenance news:
I just upgraded to version 2.8.2 and now I’m creating posts with the conveniently compartmentalized dashboard. Okay enough of that. Now on to the good stuff.

I’ve been mulling something over the last couple months: plotting world domination… or trying to decide when and what to do next, musically. You decide. I’ve been polishing new songs so that I can get them ready for public consumption. One is Confine you can hear a rough take of it on my vox blog, and the other is Patient Child.
When I’m not working on that I’ve got a whole list of songs to listen to and vote for the ones that will potentially make up the forthcoming FAWM compilation CD.

Next Friday I’ll be stopping by the Unurban Coffeehouse which is located at
3101 Pico Blvd.
Santa Monica, CA 90404

to give a couple of new songs a test drive at the open mike night starting at 8pm. No cover (unless you’re playing). Free parking in the US bank parking lot across the street and a selection of tasty beverages for all. Stop on by if you’re free.

I missed the beginning of the 50/90 challenge so I’m going to just let that one go and wish all the participants best efforts. The songs I listened to so far were great. The challenge is to write a whopping 50 songs in 90 days and it kicked off at the beginning of this month, July 4th. Technically, that’s not the beginning of this month but for musicians it’s close enough. Am I right?

readin’ writin’ and singin’

Readin’
I’ve been on a book kick lately and so I checked out seven from the library in the past three weeks. Here’s a music book review on one of them, recently posted to A Mad Vox. If you want to increase your guitar skills this may be the perfect book for you.
Writin’
This month I’m writing songs for February Album Writing Month (fawm.org) and trying to think of a way to record what I’ve written for cheap so you can listen too.
Singin’
Because of the FAWM activities, there are no scheduled shows for February, but you can always listen to my songs streaming from facebook.

Santa Monica, CA 90404
Locals, come on by! It’s free and all ages.

Friday’s open mic was packed. I haven’t been in a couple months so it was apparent how the number of people have grown, as in tickets to play are gone if you don’t get there by 8pm. It’s a good thing though.

I debuted two new songs and man, do they need work! I’m j/k. I played them just fine and I hope to do the same tonight.

And the site updates never stop… just installed WP 2.83. Oh, yeaah.
