About

When dealing with a harsh inevitability, you'll do pretty much anything to avoid thinking about it. Most importantly, in the face of that adversity, you keep busy and do what comes naturally. This is precisely what Nate Kinsella and the rest of Make Believe did when he got word that he'd be spending two months in a county jail in Oklahoma. The end result of their self-enforced distraction is Of Course, an album created and recorded entirely in under a month.

On this, their second proper full-length, Tim Kinsella and his Chicago crew continue their avant-onslaught - overcoming not just physical misplacement but psychic maladjustment as well - the resulting record juggles beautifully between overt pop spacespazz to more congenial songs, almost recalling the dance laden wonder of elder Kinsella's OWLS. Songs skitter away between Sam Zurick's erratic riffage and Bobby Burg's meandering, thumping bass lines; cousin's Nate and Tim share a stunning sense of time, both on and off the clock as they ricochet, skronk, and sway along with their cohorts.

While Make Believe are no strangers to keeping busy as they tour almost ritualistically and practice forty hours a week when they do find themselves in Chicago, the new album is truly uncharted territory for the band. Typically obsessive perfectionists, this record is unlike any of their previous releases, the most recent of which, Shock of Being, hit the streets precisely one year prior to this one oddly enough. Of Course is an airtight, exuberant and visceral statement of a band hanging together in tough times, beautifully unrevised and unrefined.

WIRE "A swinging alternative to the Windy City's neo-trad scene is provided by Make! Believe! whose second single, The Vampire Lament To His Nurse/Each Day Is Different And The Same As Cocks (Flameshovel 7") is an ass-flattener. Reminding me of a whole generation of lost children of Beefheart and also the early work of The Scene is Now, this record is really quite wonderful, surging into unexpected places with a rhythmic grace and sophistication that belies close attention to the works of Mayo Thompson."

Chicago Reader "Judging by their self-title five-song debut on Flameshovel, this is the hardest rocking group Kinsella's been involved with since his emo juggernaut Cap'n Jazz. He's at his most demostrative, blitzing through his elliptical lyrics with his voice cracking or opening up into a raw, urgent scream; Zurick, bassist Bobby Burg, and Drummer Nate Kinsella unleash a pounding attack filled with logic defying grooves that double back on themselves and swallow their own tails." - Peter Margasak

Rockpile "Between the quirkiness of Kinsella's lyrics and the band's jittery playing, Make Believe is putting a new spin on the rock formula, creating somethign that's both musically daring and enjoyable." - Kory Grow
