Marion Square

You've never heard of Marion Square. They are four young musicians from Louisville, Kentucky who have been hard at work on their music for the last few years. But the time has come for Marion Square to break out of the hometown and onto the world stage. A few words to describe Marion Square: atmospheric, electroacoustic, at times mellow, other times intense, but always melodic. Their sound and approach to making music recalls the seventies. McCall Cruse leads the band with a vocal that is feminine and strong, a true rock singer for both the guys and the girls. Their material leaves one wondering how a group of artists so young can express a musicality so refined. No hype, no gimmicks, no press angle. Just four young musicians making their music, quietly insistent that there is a place in the world for their voice.

how bad i suck at finding things

hey good ppl,
I've got something to get off my chest - I am seriously, ridiculously bad at finding things. This could be due to my organizational skills, my attention span or rather the lack thereof, but really I think this problem goes much deeper than that. Let me tell how I came to realize I was in the negatives on the finding stuff scale.
Yesterday morning I was in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Louisville finishing up the landscape work that I was writing about the other day. It was pretty warm and I was rocking the sleeves and pants to ward off the masses of mosquitoes (don't get me started on those insects - that's a whole other blog...). I'm spreading the mulch, pulling the weeds, trimming the hedges, you know taking care of business. I take care of all that and go for the last phase - mowing the 4 square feet of grass that is the front yard. The mower is electric and very quiet, so quiet that when it's running I'm pretty impressed and I forget the instructions that came with it. Most notably of those instructions was that one of the pins keeping the handle attached to the mower was loose and could fall out. Yea, it fell out.
The thing is only about an inch long and is painted black. I notice it is gone and that's when all this started. I trace and re-trace my steps for a good thirty minutes. I'm not seeing anything at all. While I'm walking around I get to thinking, how many times in my life have I played this game - moving around 2 mph scanning the ground and thinking, "You know you are not going to find it, but go ahead buddy, keep trying..." I try a little more and then I had a revelation....
My moms always told me that men couldn't locate things to save their life. Perhaps that may be a broad generalization but for me, she hit the nail on the head. In a kind of daunting way I start to realize just how much time I've spent looking for things and never even finding them. I was seeing how it all began back when I was younger - looking for the action figure or awesome toy, up to the homework/papers and now finally this stupid pin thingy for the electric mower. It was nowhere to be found and all I was thinking was that when it comes to finding stuff - I am not the man with the plan.
I head back to the house to explain that I lost the pin on the neighbor's mower. Lo and behold - the damn thing was attached to the mower the whole time!!! Arrgh. I went ahead and chalked the scoreboard at: Life-1 Brent-0, and went home.

my weird physical - ian

so I went to a new doctor yesterday for a physical since I had been going to a pediatrician for too long, even though she was a friend of my mom. I'm not used to having a guy say, "okay drop your pants I'm going to look at your balls". Lets just say he wasn't the fastest doctor while he was casually and slowly gripping, um, basically everything "manly" I own.

After my groping, a female nurse told me she was going to do blood work and missed the vein in my arm 3 times and got it on the 4th... I really think I could have done a better job. She said, "sometimes it's hard to hit the right spot"... at that time I really wanted to say, "that's what she said" but I refrained.

That's all for now, check out www.marionsquaremusic.com and click all of our widgets homies!

bye squares,

wine is delicious and so is sia - brent

hellloo
whats happening with you? let me lay a couple words on you having to do with this semi-rock star life of mine and the past couple days i've had. since the jacket show i've been working in the dirt, jamming some new tunes, finding new artists, and even threw a little wine/cheese party....mmm cheese.
You may not know this about me, but I used to have a job. I worked over at the Frank Otte's in St. Matthews. I did landscaping and other things that required a lot of energy for a couple summers there. If you haven't done much landscaping, you should give it a go - there is something surprisingly relaxing about moving around some plants. At the nursery it was always an early morning but the quiet and fresh air was always nice. Anyways I hadn't done much landscaping lately and I recently got passed some work and I've been loving it! It's really being outside more than anything I think...
Along with the work, I've been at play when the time is right - and I've been coming up with some new material that I am really pleased with! I love coming up with a new tune, especially now that I'm starting to put some vocal melody down. Singing is so new to me that I find repeating a song 100 times doesn't drive me crazy... partly because I enjoy it a lot and that I am still figuring things out about my voice that have honestly been surprising. The biggest thing I've been learning is that there is a lot confidence required to really sing out, and that means really hearing the mistakes. As uncomfortable and sometimes hilarious as that is, it comes easier the more I do it. We will be working some of this stuff in the band and Ill have it up on my myspace once things are ready. Along with my new tunes, I've found an artist I gotta shout out for a second.
As I was perusing Brian's music library on the itunes I saw a track from Sia that I had not heard. It was off the radiohead tribute album titled, "exit music" which if you are into radiohead it's a must have; some really talented artists adding more creativity to already awesome music. Go listen to "Breathe Me", it is one sweet track, and the video is awesome to boot! I have been jamming to the remix and really hearing the xylophone off the track is just too much for me to not dance! Love her inflection and tone - really unique.....
Not so unique is the sight of me partying with friends, and that is exactly what went down last night....with style and sophistication. Oh yes, wine and cheese parties are my new thing, not only is cheese just one of the best things to happen to me personally, but I can get down with some cabernet sauvignon - muah! So we had some friends over that I had not seen in quite a while and that is always a good thing to catch up. Especially with wine, as I am already a low talker (if you know me you've had to ask "What did you say?" atleast 3 times per conversation) wine kinda works my jaw loose. To be honest, I don't shut the hell up once I've got a couple glasses down! So it was a great night for conversation and the fine wines - can't beat it.
I hope you guys have enjoyed yourself a well deserved glass and some cheese on a cracker if that type of thing tickles your fancy, all work and no play is just no good. Don't be allowing such nonsense to be going on, relax and take five - if anybody says something tell em' brent said it was all good.

Cover Songs - yes or no? - mccall

Cover songs- yes or no? -McCall
Current mood: indifferent

Hello everyone! Its about 12 o'clock in the afternoon and i just arrived at Brian and Brent's apartment after our weekly Thursday meeting at Another Place Sandwich shop. This weeks meeting we mainly talked about our upcoming shows and how to snazz them up a bit to be more audience friendly.

Theres always a disagreement between the band about doing cover songs or "copy songs" as Jim Goodwin calls them! I think that when a band is just starting to get out there (much like us) they should always throw in several relatively popular cover songs. It keeps the audience interested especially if all of the bands music is unfamiliar to the audience. Plus, its fun to perform songs that i enjoy listening to at live shows! But Brian in particular hates doing covers (well hate is a strong word, he doesn't like it much). We always get into arguments or more so, tiffs, about what covers to do or whether to do any. BUT TO WRAP THIS RAMBLE UP, we're going to start to attempt to throw a couple more popular cover songs into our sets. It works well at shows like Woodhaven Country club because the people are used to cover bands playing there, not original music.

We're also playing at the Gas Light Festival out in J-town and i'm pretty excited about it! I've gone to it several years before and had a great time. My aunt Connie and Uncle Joe live out in Jtown so they always go to the festival.

well, i'm off to check up on all of my band websites! After three hours of working on the computer today i think we're also going to practice for our show tomorrow. This will be a looonngg day!

Peace,
McCall Alicen Cruse
