Mary Blacklock taught herself guitar 7 years ago as a college freshman and began exploring songwriting not long after. In the beginning, her music expressed a mellow folk sound encouraged by playing the classical guitar she learned on. Recent recording sessions suggest the emergence of a folk rock style with a hint of soul.
Mary's lyrical writing often intrigues or catches the listener off guard. During a set she usually sings songs on social issues as well as songs based on the humors of life discovered in unlikely places.
In 2006 Mary Blacklock served as a Young Adult Volunteer in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. During this time away from her graduate studies she began working on new songs. 'Snow Angels on the Pavement' resulted from reflection on aspects of her volunteer year.
"One day I looked out of my apartment window and the parking lot was empty of cars and covered in snow. I felt the urge to run outside and lay down on the pavement and make snow angels, but I talked myself out of it.
I was concerned that a car might drive up speedily with me vulnerable to getting run over. I let a hint of fear get the best of me that day and I knew that I had missed an opportunity to simply enjoy the snow in a carefree way. That day stayed with me because it brought to mind other times in my life when I refrained from doing something I wanted to do because of fear.
The song also speaks beyond growing into myself as someone unwilling to hold back who she is in fear of what might happen when the world sees me for me. It deals with the struggles of living and accomplishing your dreams; it suggests that even in the difficult times there is hope."
Mary recorded 'Snow Angels on the Pavement' as well as 'Blizzard Winds' with one of Cincinnati's local artists, Mark Brasington. Not only did Mark assist in recording, but he also plays electric guitar and tambourine in 'Snow Angels on the Pavement'.
Mary is now in the Dallas, TX area.
