Mary-Kathryn

In a world of disposable pop music, there are a few artists who somehow manage to create music that pierces the monotonous tedium of the Top 40. From the first time we hear them there is an intimacy, a fire, a subtle shade of interpretation that spurs our imagination. With repeated encounters comes a warmth and familiarity that can only be described as visceral. We connect with them. We feel we know them. Mary-Kathryn is such an artist.

On her fourth album, Dreams & Visions, Mary-Kathryn blends elements of soft pop, rock and folk with world music influences as diverse as the continents to create a spiritual amalgam that transcends musical boundaries. Sophisticated without being elitist; understated without being simplistic, Mary-Kathryn displays an emotional
depth that can only be described as remarkable. The album features appearances by Hugh Marsh on Violin and Fergus Marsh on Chapman Stick & Bass, Tony Morra on Drums & Percussion, the Finnish vocal group Fire 4U, co-produced by Paul Buono and Mary-Kathryn and mixed by Tony Palacios at the Sound Kitchen.

While her earlier releases hinted at Mary-Kathryn's world music influences, her new millennium release, One Spirit, exploded with exotic rhythms and Old World passions. Middle Eastern cadences nestled comfortably against Native American inflections. Traditional folk melodies from France, Italy, and America melded seamlessly with musical influences from such faraway lands as India and
Ireland, Africa and Egypt. And shot through it all was a deep and abiding spirituality.

With Dreams & Visions Mary-Kathryn delves even deeper into the world music realm, painting word pictures on an aural canvas with exotic instrumentation, adroit production, and lyrics that are nothing short of Godhaunted. But as Billboard Magazine's reviewer so aptly put it, "the most affecting instrument...is Mary-Kathryn's lovely voice."

Live Concert DVD coming soon!

Last October I did a concert set at Grace Center in Franklin, Tennessee and it's going to be available on DVD within the next few days. CDBaby is where you'll be able to get it (www.cdbaby.com/all/marykathryn) so check the link.

The concert includes songs from Dreams & Visions as well as a couple of popular songs from previous albums ("Let Us Praise" from One Spirit and "Tehillah" from Stream In the Desert). In addition, I've included a bonus video of "Incense of Praise" that was shot at The Anchor in Nashville.

The live experience takes this music and the spirit to a whole new level. I can't wait to share it with you!

Blessings,
Mary-Kathryn

Wonder

"Christmas renews our youth by stirring our wonder. The capacity for wonder has been called our most pregnant human faculty, for in it are born our art, our science, our religion." Ralph W. Sockman

Christmas is coming soon, and it always brings back memories of our childhood. It also reminds us of the fact that the greatest gift of Christmas really wasn't the stuff we got, but the sense of wonder and awe that we had leading up to Christmas day. The gift of hope in something, or someone, wonderful who would hear our whispers in the night of what we really "wanted more than anything else" under the tree. Do you remember that?

Wonder is a gift that every child enters the world with, but that the cares of the world and of life can be allowed to steal. Guarding the wonder of your heart should be viewed the same as guarding life's most precious possession. Without it we become callous and synical. Our senses become dulled by a lack of hope and inspiration. We stop creating, because we don't see the point anymore. We lose our ability to see the beauty, the wonder, the awe of all creation around us.

Romans 1:20 says, "By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can't see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being. So nobody has a good excuse."

Look around you today and dare to see through the eyes of wonder. Let your senses be filled with the awe of God's creation. Allow your spirit to hope again in someone greater than yourself; someone who will never disappoint. Be inspired again! Let your heart be filled with wonder.
