God so Loved the World

The Apostle John tells us that the heart of God is for His world.

“For God so loved the world that He gave his Only begotten son, that whoever should believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Humans reflect some of that concern for others too. Think of it, all around us are trained, equipped and motivated people whose job and life ambition is to rescue those in trouble.

For example, we train therapists to help people in emotional need, counselors to help those in marriage trouble. We have lawyers to defend the rights of victims. Firemen run into burning buildings to save people, pets and possessions.

We rely on police to protect citizens and help the legal system remove dangerous people from society. We have EMTs to help people in medical emergencies as well as doctors and nurses for those who are sick. And the list goes on…

But the questions to be asked and answered are these: ”How are we doing? How is society? Are we making headway in averting problems or are we just providing a temporary reprieve?”

When you look at life horizontally, it is obvious that pain, problems and panic remain. We have not seen any decrease in emotional stress, divorce, accidents, dangerous incidents, crime, sickness or disease. Yet God’s heart is still for His world!

What do we need?

We need exactly what God already provided.

When God decided to rescue those He created and loves, He didn’t send a therapist, a policeman, a lawyer or a doctor. He sent a Redeemer.

Mankind does not need another social solution to its persistent problems; we need a Savior! We need someone bigger than ourselves who can help us now and fix us forever. That person, we all know, is Jesus.

Therefore, what I believe we need to do — besides train and send professional problem solvers — is remind people of this fact. After we provide temporary help to the troubled, we need to turn their attention upward to Him.

The best gift we can give the world, especially those we know and love, is the gospel. Salvation is the only solution for ultimate safety for a hurting world and dying populace.

Providing knowledge of that gift is what this mission, Master’s Men, is completely devoted to doing.

Please join us in prayer as we launch our new evangelism initiative with the local church known as M3.

We will present this easy-to-use method for small group evangelism at the Catalyst conference this October 7-9 in Atlanta, GA. We are asking God to give us 1% of the pastors present, 120 churches (12,000 will be there) to appreciate and utilize this men’s outreach and church growth tool. Our desire is the Lord’s who “desires all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth… that none perish but that all come to repentance” (1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9). Please pray for the success of this tool that we might give to the Lord a greater harvest in Christ before He comes.

Purposefully,

Gentlemen, Presenting M3

What is M3?

M3 gives men’s small groups a guide to our successful relational evangelism method.

M3 offers a simple six-week guide for men’s Bible study groups presenting our easy, step-by-step method of reaching friends, peers and co-workers for Christ.

M3 is a new ministry initiative to provide this resource to local churches as a tool to reach more men and thereby grow their body with new families.

M3 will be launched October 7-9 in Atlanta at the Catalyst Conference where 12,000 pastors will be gathering for fellowship, worship, workshops and exposure to contemporary methods God is using to draw people to Himself. Both speakers and exhibitors will present these methods. We are one such exhibitor.

Here is an excerpt from M3:

“Let’s get started. Here is a paint-by-numbers, one-two-three sequencing approach for starting your outreach effort, including how to conduct an outreach event, followed by launching a discipleship team that leads to new members for the church.

“First, someone needs to say, ‘Enough, someone needs to reach men for Christ.’ Someone needs to say, ‘Count me in.’ This first phase is initially the hardest phase. Think of it as the surrender phase, better known as the ‘send me’ commitment phase, as we surrender to serve God as a witness. Since you have read this far, it is obvious that you are one such person and ready to ‘go.’ So let’s do it.

“The second phase is to create a team. The next thing you will want to do is invite a couple of like minded friends to join you on the adventure. And what is the adventure? The adventure is to step out of the comfort zone of the apathetic and to engage some other Christian men in crafting a workable effort to reach friends or co-workers for Christ.

“It has always been Christ’s method to have two or more [men] team up before launching out to reach others. And it has always been His method to prepare them ahead of time (see Mark 6:7; Luke 10:1). To be effective, an outreach team recognizes that productive ministry begins with prayer.

“How exactly do you create a team? Here are the steps.”…page 37

Pray for M3. Please pray for the success of this initiative, the book, and our launch in Atlanta on October 7th. We want to see Christ glorified by the faithful obedience of His people to apply themselves, today, to the Great Commission.

We are praying for 1% of the churches in attendance at Catalyst to use this program, for starters. If we can get 120 churches to use M3, think what a difference this will make to men, families, neighborhoods and the churches reached by them! Thanks for joining us in this great adventure of faith. We appreciate your support.

Finances: For all of you who gave last month, I thank you humbly, appreciatively. We continue to need everyone’s help and will again this month. I ask you to continue to help as the Lord enables you. Thank you and may the Lord reward you.

Purposefully,

Whining or Witnessing?

It has become popular to criticize, publicly, the current administration. I get at least an e-mail a day doing so. Today I got one calling them fascists! What’s with that?

A lot of Christians are spending a lot of vocal time decrying our governmental policies and how it is going to further “ruin” our country. I understand, the political, economic, military and moral news emanating from our nation’s capital and around the country concerns me too.

Complaining, I find, is easy, but it’s mostly unproductive or worse, counter productive. It breeds contempt, it is contagious, it leads to anger and anger almost always leads to an action we’ll regret. Worst of all it takes our attention off the right thing – what we, personally, ought to do not say, to fix the problem. Ever thought about that? That is my firm belief, folks.

And here is another of my beliefs, I have a solution, one borrowed from scripture, the one Jesus used. After all, don’t most of us own a WWJD bracelet? We’ll I think it’s high time we decided to use it for the current distress in society. This is what Jesus would do, or better did and taught his disciples to do…sure He taught them to pray but he also taught them how to relate to politicians and culture.

The solution is this; If we want to fix the government, and with it the social landscape, then we must change our behavior. We need to stop the whining and start the witnessing. To change policy decisions, we must change the legislative personnel. To do that we must change how people vote, after all we have the leaders we selected. Ever think about that; that we sort of have what we deserve?

To change the way people vote you must change the way they think, the way they believe. And to do that the only solution is to transform their hearts, minds and perspective of life through the grace of God, through the gospel.

Do you know that a Barna survey found that the typical churched believer will die without ever leading another person to Christ? And only 2.9% of born again believers ever share their faith. What a miserable statistic; especially when weighed against the life of Christ, the training of the twelve and his last words and testament on earth…“GO MAKE DISCIPLES”… you see, witnessing is every believer’s responsibility, not just missionaries.

How can we expect to reach the world for Christ with so few willing to share the only piece of information that will lead a personal to salvation, the only truth that will set them free, the only news that will supernaturally capture their heart and give them the mind of Christ, the only persuasive knowledge that will change the way they view life, live life and vote for those who are similarly aligned in philosophy? Jesus knew that and that is what he dedicated His ministry to fixing, not government but people – through a heart change. Do that and every thing fixes itself!

Do you realize that according to scripture non believers by definition are fools (Psalm 14:1) and by simple deduction two things emerge from that one fact? One; they can not, I repeat, can not make a wise decision because wisdom comes from God and is given to those who fear the lord (Proverbs 9:10)! And second, according to Psalm 14:1; “they are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; there is no one who does good.”, we ought to assume sinners will sin and not be at all sympathetic to our eternal perspective of life and the absolute need for a biblical morality.

You know who voted for the folks you are complaining about? If not you at least your neighbors did. And you know who for you see the bumper sticker on their cars. What have you done to change their minds? Ever entertained the notion of trying to reach them with the gospel?

What’s the problem? Are you not sure how, is it too hard, or wondering “how do I get started”? Glad you asked. THAT IS THE DEDICATION OF OUR MINISTRY GOING FORWARD,. The Master’s Men ministry, because of just this problem has developed a simple application for believers to use in order to help them better share their faith that we all may stop the whining and start the witnessing. IT’S CALLED M3.

M3 is an evangelism study and event planning guide constructed for believers to help churches reach men through men and thereby grow their churches. It is our successful Master’s Men Method written down for all to understand and employ.

That manuscript is written and on the editor’s desk now. We will launch this initiative at the Catalyst, Pastors’ conference, in Atlanta, on October 7th 2009. There, we will place before some 11,000 pastors this blue print for training Christian men to reach non churched men and recruit families back to Christ, to church and to biblical living. If this catches fire, this will not only enlarge the body of Christ, it will help stem the tide of folly in our land. We need you to join us in prayer for this imperative initiative and necessary tool for the church.

America needs an awakening. I agree. But my solution is what I read in scripture. There I find the only verbal response warranted by God is twofold. The first is to confess our sins and pray for revival in our own lives (2 Chronicles 7:14) and the second is to confess the truth about Christ to the people in our sphere of influence (Mark 16:15). I don’t see criticism as a biblical option for changing people or government. In fact Paul tells us to knock it off (Philippians 2:14, 15) it is unbecoming a Christian.

So I offer you a choice, folks; witness or whine. It’s up to you. But as for me and our ministry…we must serve the Lord’s way of doing business in a fallen world. I hope you will join us.

Finances: By the way, for all of you who gave last month; I thank you, humbly, appreciatively.
We continue to need everyone’s help and will again this month. So I ask you to continue to
help as the Lord enables you. Thank you and may the Lord reward you.

“The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”
Proverbs 11:25 NLT

An Interesting Paradox

I have been writing all year about two significant themes: life is tough and God is changing men.

I find it interesting that so much growth and improvement comes from trial. It is just what we should expect because it is just what the Lord’s brother, James, wrote:

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” James 1:2-4

We are all familiar with the financial stresses that face most Americans. I am ready for that to go away. You probably are too. The irony is that financial trouble has exposed the false hopes and irrational assumptions of many men. As one author asks, “since when are we trading rationality for stupidity?” Answer: for some time it seems!

Now that the margin for error has eroded, men see they need to recalibrate their focus. Many men are seeking a new “faith” beyond their career, government, recreation, bad habits, immorality, and debt.

They now know they need something new, something now, so they are seeking God, looking for solutions. I call that wisdom. That too is just what James tells us to expect and pursue:

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1-5

Therefore I can report a paradox; our ministry has never had the attention of men more than it does now. We have never seen such transparency and repentance, such a chance to “preach” the good and gripping news of the gospel. We have never seen such wholesale change of hearts, lives, and thereby family quality – the very goal we pursue in this ministry.

The results to date are this:
15% increase in teams
Salvation decisions up 10%; re-dedication decisions up 30% over last year
Full-time staff up 25%
20% increase in volunteers
Constituency growth in our business sector up 25%; up 5% in NASCAR

However, the economy has bit us hard too:
Donor drop off, 20%
Income drop off, 34%

How do we do more on less?
We have not cut services! We have cut travel 80%, using local staff or volunteers for all events. That is the benefit of having built up a national network of workers over the last 9 years!

We mobile office, which
	- Saves us rent costs, office staff salaries, phone line bills, and more
	- Keeps our men with other men “doing ministry” rather than in the office “doing meetings.”
We use fewer vendors and pool our staff and volunteer talent to get our admin work done.

But we could use some help now. We’ve cut all we can, including compensation. As one businessman told me, now we must “sell” our way to break-even. Of course we don’t sell, we serve, but we must ask. And I am doing that now.

Can you, will you help? Will you pray for us, now? Can you write a check or go online to give a donation?

There is too much good work to be done for us to have to throttle back. Can you help us keep the ministry momentum going even though the economy has slowed down?

Thank you for any help you can give…and God’s blessings for all of you who are already doing all you can. We appreciate your faithful support.

Purposefully,

Jim Cote

Lessons from a "Walker"

Surgery a month-and-a-half ago was an interesting experience. After years of limping on a bad right knee, the docs replaced it. For bone I traded metal and plastic.

I remember the first time I went into the doctor’s office for a consultation. They had a shadow box display of the knee, hip and shoulder replacement parts that the joint replacement center uses. They were so proud of them that they made an artistic display to show them off. I was so repulsed by the medieval looking pieces that I nearly turned around and walked back out. They looked more appropriate as a rack-and-pinion set for a sports car than replacement parts for me.

I wasn’t getting around very well with the joint I had, but at least I was walking. I was unconvinced that they could improve my condition by switching body parts for “auto” parts, or so it seemed. But alas, I finally succumbed to the pain, had the operation, and on April 15th I received my new bionic knee.

Next day I was off to rehab, clutching my “walker” and moving at the speed of a 120-year-old man. The hospital stay was good. Everyone was supportive but once I left and moved back to civilian life, I was brought up short by new life truths I had never before experienced. When you are at less than your best, you discover the truth about yourself. For me it was simply this, I let disability bring out the worst in me!

In the weeks that followed my surgery, I spent 4 weeks home alone, under “house arrest” as my doctor put it. In subsequent weeks I went to rehab, weaning myself off the walker and then the cane as I worked to get my leg strength back and walk properly.

There were many times I was really surprised by how I felt and acted – very much less than Christ-like. I decided to write in a journal the lessons God was teaching me. There are about 20 to date. I wanted to learn these lessons now so I wouldn’t have to repeat them later. I want to offer a few to you today, so that you might glean from my experience whatever will help you to better walk with Christ, through whatever disappointments or disabilities you find yourself.

I am not humble. It is humiliating to need someone else to help you do everything. I didn’t like it (John 5:7). But it is good to have family and friends to help you. They are a bigger blessing than I imagined (Prov 17:17).

I am not as spiritual as I thought. I over-prioritize physical ability and strength (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). I am learning that a grace comes from suffering that glorifies Christ and magnifies ministry (2 Cor 1:3-5).

I knew I was impatient. I just didn’t realize how much, which led to anger that hurt others (James 1:19, 20). Being resigned to “rest” in the Lord, I found Him there enabling me to extend grace to others — to bless them — when what I wanted was my leg back and now! (Psalm 46:10; Galatians 5:22)

I am an American male. I have heard that God is my “all in all” and “His grace is sufficient” (2 Cor 12:9, 10). I just live like John Wayne, thinking I can do all things myself, thanks, by grit, hard work and mental acumen. Now I am learning more of the “secret” as Paul puts it (Phil 4:11-13) of learning contentment in the current circumstances I cannot change, while trusting Christ to give me the strength to do what I must do for myself as I move forward – and the difference between the two!

If you are facing a tough dilemma or an insurmountable challenge, if you feel weak or just find yourself stuck without a way forward, I encourage you to stop moving and use your other body parts. Use your ears to listen to God and the advice of those who love you. Use your eyes to scan His word to find truth for your present situation. Use your heart to receive His Spirit. He longs to encourage you, guide you and sanctify (change) you. And use your mouth to pray, humbly asking for real help, and to praise Him for His Majesty and help He has already given.

Remember too, He has not removed His love from us or His plan for us, or His presence with us. So let’s draw near to Him in our time of need. There we will find Him faithful, and there He will work to conform us to His image. That is probably the real point of this present, humbling, frustrating situation. At least it was for me.

In Tough Times - 2 Things.

We were going turkey hunting and coming close to the end of cell phone range. One of my Master’s Men disciples was taking me and another guest to his lease for two days of peace and quiet. I was excited!

After the intensity of the year’s first quarter of ministry and preceding my surgery, I was looking forward to this break when the phone rang. On the other end was one of the young professionals I had met in NASCAR. He sounded distraught; his tone and comments scared me. His boss had just been informed him that he had lost his job.

We stopped the truck, I held my phone up for better reception and the men in the truck began to pray. They couldn’t help hearing what was going on.

He was scared to death. He told me he had a wife, two kids, narrow business experience, a mortgage and other obligations. And he felt he was too old and unemployable to get a new job. Therefore he didn’t think they’d make it. He felt he was a failure. He was mad, he was sorry, he was certain they would soon lose the house and have to “live under a bridge.”

With cell coverage waning, I didn’t have much time to talk and he understood that. But beyond a promise to get back on the phone with him when I got back into town, I gave him a few bullets of hope, a few things to do, some encouragement to help him move forward rather than sink in despair. I prayed for him and we finished our call.

Fortunately, he held on! When we got back on the phone two days later, he was in a better frame of mind. He thanked me for my time and words. Then he told me that something was missing in him. He wasn’t complete, he wasn’t a good man, he needed something else if he was really going to change and succeed.

Ha! It took me a minute but I got it. He needed Jesus, in Whom we are made complete (Colossians 2:10). He needed to be born again so he could receive God’s forgiveness of sins; a new nature and the residence of the Holy Spirit; and experience the fact that he was now a new creature. “Old things having passed away, everything from here on out is new (2 Corinthians 5:17)!” So I told him what I thought, he agreed, we prayed, and he accepted Christ on the phone. We were both in tears at the end. What a great answer for a man in crisis, needing more than himself. He needed and
received a relationship with the all-powerful God of the universe, available to all who call on His name. Hallelujah!

After that, we began working on 2 things: pursuing his relationship with God and a practical plan for getting back into the game, professionally.

It’s the same for all men going through tough times. We all need 2 things. We need the power of God and a practical plan. If you are one of the men going through tough times, here are a few suggestions on what to do next

Power of God: remember…
You need God, it is Him alone who gives you the “ability” to make a living — Deuteronomy 8:81
When you need His encouragement, read the Psalms
When you need his wisdom, read Proverbs
When you need something unusual, read the miracles of Christ
When you wonder whether He will provide and confirm His word, read Philippians 4:19 and Isaiah 30:18-21
You need others too, so pray and pursue relationships
You need “favor” with industry leaders and employers – read Proverbs 21:1
You need people to intercede for you with prayer – note Ephesians 6:19a
You’ll need community to encourage you during this process – read Hebrews 10:24, 25
You’ll need people to network you, help you to meet others – read John 1:35-42

Practical Plan: remember…at all costs; get off your R.E.A.R so you can move forward
Refresh your resumé, your contact database and industry knowledge to help you move on
Establish: a call schedule; a job hunt budget (it costs money to job search, consider it investing, sowing into your future); and good health disciplines (work out, eat right, sleep enough, and beware of too much alcohol or recreation).

Attitude is everything – plan on being positive, think positive; no one likes a negative person
Routine — do it. Get up, get dressed and go to work, even if it’s at the kitchen table. Develop a professional pattern for the use of your time. Include large quantities of time with God in this. He is currently trying to coach you and change you if you’ll let Him!

There is certainly more to this subject that I can address here, but it’s a start. And I hope it has provided you hope.

I hope you are encouraged to trust God and move forward, or, if you are employed, that it gives you something to help others.

And don’t forget, this is an opportune time to introduce men to Jesus. Who knows, that may be exactly why all this is going on, so let’s not forget to share Christ as we help men find jobs and secure families.

Need more help? Then contact us at www.mastersmen.com. Our entire mission is geared to helping men find Christ and get into Christian community so we can develop better men — husbands, dads, workers and citizens.

We’d love to help you.

Don't Let This Wreck That!

As I talk with men around the country, one big impression has emerged: market stress has caused marriage distress. The challenging economic conditions are super-challenging families, especially marriages.

A recent trip to Charlotte underscored this fact both positively and negatively.

On the positive side, a wedding I attended there inspired me. The son of past board member Gary Brobst was married that weekend. Gary is now a resident of heaven, having gone to be with the Lord a few years back. Cancer took him from us and Grace got him to heaven.

But you would have thought he was still walking among us given the number of times his name was mentioned in
conversation and in the ceremony. Gary did such a fabulous job of loving his wife and tending to the needs of his family, biblically, that his legacy lives on, influencing the atmosphere and theme of his son’s wedding.

Gary left such a mark of blessing on his family and friends that we couldn’t help remembering his Christ-like contribution to us all. Now, his outstanding family “ministry” is the goal his son most wants to repeat. It all reminded me of the passage in Hebrews that says the outstanding “faith” of past saints gives them a voice into future generations: “…through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks” (Hebrews 11:4).

Gary exemplified what a Christian husband and father was meant to be – provider, protector and pastor. And no amount of current market stress could take away that fact. Even his physical absence could not diminish the impact his loving life had on them. “Though dead, he still spoke”…with authority on the way to love and lead a family.

I wish it were so for the many other men I spoke with that week. Too many had allowed finances to frustrate and fracture the union at home.

One guy in particular, whom I had married a few years back, told me that he and his wife were struggling – and were now seeing a counselor trying to work out their differences. The irony was that as he told me this, I noticed a collage of pictures by his workstation showcasing the values of his life. In one corner was a picture of his wife in her beautiful wedding gown on the day of their marriage; next to her, their 1-year-old daughter. Clustered around them were pictures of horses, four-wheelers, Jet Skis, a ski boat and a pickup truck.

When I asked what the problem was, he said “money” – lay-offs and credit cards. Financial stress had broken their peace and been allowed to rob their satisfaction, leading to frustration with one another.

What happened next surprised even me. I pulled a twenty-dollar bill from my wallet, held it firmly in my hand, and said, “See this. This is worthless. See that,” and I took my two hands and framed the picture of his wife and daughter with them, “this is everything. See those toys,” as I pointed to the other pictures, “they are worthless. See that,” back to his family “that is everything. Don’t let this” extending the twenty note in front of us both, “wreck that,” and now I pointed solely to his family.

Guys reading this newsletter, the same goes for you and me. I know it is tough out there but it is temporary. Your family is not. They are your life, now and until the Lord calls you home. Don’t give up that which has eternal value for that which does not. Don’t let money wreck your marriage. Don’t let finances disrupt your family.

Need help, see a credit counselor, see your pastor, see one of our staff, but don’t blow up your home over this recession. Take the long view, take the biblical view, be more like Gary, or better, like Jesus. That is what this ministry is organized to help men do, so let us help you.
