Growing up in Toronto Canada I was always singing in some way or another whether it was a choir or a school talent show. When I was 9 years old I got my first guitar and started to really get into music. I wrote my first song when I was 12, and by the time I was 15, I had enough tunes to pick the best twelve and record an album. My debut album, Today, Today, Today, was released in June 2005 and was produced by Gerry Mosby (who also produced award winning albums for Grammy nominee Euphoria, Juno award winners Alfie Zappacosta and Devon Martin, and the debut CD for Staggered Crossing). Since the release of my debut album, I have worked with some well respected names in the music industry in LA, London UK, Nashville, and Toronto. I have co-written with Tommy Sims (producer of Bruce Springsteens's "Streets of Philadelphia" and writer of Eric Clapton's "If I Could Change the World"), Jude Cole (manager of Lifehouse, co-writer of the recent hit "You and Me", and partner of Ironworks Music with Kiefer Sutherland), Alfie Zappacosta (Juno and American Music Award winner), Dave Dunlop (The Full Nine), and Julian Taylor (Staggered Crossing). I recorded some tunes in LA with producers James Barber (Ryan Adams and Courtney Love) and Jude Cole (Rocco DeLuca and Mozella). In June of 2006 I spent some time in Nashville where I wrote and recorded material for my second album. Tommy Sims produced the 7 song EP which was released in early 2007 when I was 18 years old. I am currently represented by veteran entertainment lawyer Jim Zumwalt of the Nashville firm Zumwalt, Almon, and Hayes, whose clients include Faith Hill, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tommy Sims, Courtney Love, and the estate of Kurt Cobain. I am now 20 years old and currently studying Songwriting and Guitar at Berklee College Of Music in Boston with a full scholarship. I continue to Perform around Toronto and Boston both solo acoustically and with a full band.
John Mayer has provided the strongest influence and inspiration for me to become a singer, songwriter and guitarist. Other important musical influences include Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, The Gershwin Brothers, Frank Loesser, Stephen Sondheim, Chet Baker, Tommy Sims, James Taylor, Livingston Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Michael Jackson, D'Angelo, John Lee Hooker, Prince, Jeff Buckley, James Morrison, Ben Harper Jonny Lang and anything from Motown.
"Matthew’s mature lyrics and strong, melodic compositions ...are way beyond his years”, comments Gerry Mosby. "He has definite ideas as to who he is musically, and how he wants to be perceived. He amazes me with his exploding talent and energy.”
"There's something there", says Nashville artist/producer Tommy Sims. "Something very simple and driven by just the right, raw song and recording (ala, Van Morrison or James Blunt)."
