Can you remember a moment in your life, one singular moment, when your life changed?? When you realized what you were meant to do, and who you were meant to be?? For Matt that moment came July 23, 1999. Imagine looking out over a crowd of 250,000 people swaying to a song with lighters lit up. It's magical, and for Matt seeing that happen while Gavin Rossdale sang "Glycerine", alone on stage, has defined his life ever since. It was at that moment that Matt decided he was meant to make music. And from that moment on that is what he did.
Hailing from small town upstate New York, Matt started gigging around SUNY Cortland, where for years he dominated the music scene there. Initially playing open mics, Matt starting lying to club owners about his age to land opening slots for touring acts coming through town (and the beer obviously). Growing his audience, he was able to triple sell out his favorite venue and play to a crowd of 300 fans singing along, all when he was only the opening act.
During this time, he was able to travel all over the east coast and midwest and experience life on the road. To Matt, this experience can be the best and worst of times. There's a beauty to entering and playing a new and unfamiliar city and still being welcomed by name. Yet at the same time, being on the road is an exceptionally lonely, isolating, and introspective experience, something that changed his outlook on life and something that still affects him. His experiences on the road built confidence, perseverance, and a toughness that is necessary for a musicians life.
After going through a series of life changing and testing experiences, Matt moved to Florida, where he kept pursuing his one dream, albeit with a lot more time spent in the ocean and at tiki bars. Now located in North Carolina, he is poised to take over the Raleigh scene and again the east coast, while at the same time writing his best material for an upcoming recording session.
Heartbreak, loneliness, longing, and maybe at times a glimpse of optimism. This is nothing but day-to-day life funneled through six strings, a broken voice, and eyes that have seen their fair share of the world and it's people, for better or worse.
