Mike Dees is a Singer/Songwriter from Memphis, TN. A prolific purveyor of Southern-fried power pop and veteran of many bands, he recently struck out on his own and hasn't looked back since. Whether playing solo acoustic or with a full-on rock band, he always delivers heartfelt (if slightly acidic) lyrics and ragged jangle rock.
Look for his cover of the obscure Jellyfish track "Let This Dream Never End" on Sensory Lullabies:The Ultimate Tribute To Jellyfish, coming this summer from Burning Sky Records. His song "Fields Of Light" is featured on "Wednesdays In Memphis", a benefit CD for St. Jude's Target House, available now.

News & Updates

Hey peoples! Long time, no blog. So what's been going on?

I have a few new pages up at Last.fm (http://www.last.fm/music/Mike+Dees), Virb ( http://www.virb.com/mikedees), and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=676706213), so hit me up there if you're so inclined.

I've rotated the songs on the music players a bit. First up is a demo of "Supervillain", a rockin little number that celebrates all things nerdy. Then we have "Tamed", which shows that all men are dogs and sometime we're treated as such. Over on the other profile (http://www.myspace.com/door23 if you haven't checked it out yet) are "First In Line" and "Living Stereo", two songs showcasing the more laid back, 70's California rock vibe.

I also posted 5 new live videos from back in the days when I fronted a band called The Jaspers. You can see them in the video section or on my YouTube account (http://www.youtube.com/user/23alhazred23)

We just finished recording a version of The Posies "Flood of Sunshine" for "Beautiful Escape: The Ultimate Tribute To The Posies" from our friends at Burning Sky Records. New pics from the sessions are up now. The featured solos by Tracy "Thunderjack" Chappell (guitar) and Roger "Sonny" Johns (keyboards) a freaking amazing! We recorded it at Memphis Independent Recording and Chris Swenson did an excellent job engineering it. I highly recommend them to any musicians looking to record. Signs look good for inclusion on the album, so keep your fingers crossed!

Enjoy!
Mike Dees

I highly recommend her to anybody needing professional quality photographs at a reasonable rate. Bands, she's available for live and promo shots and is a rocker at heart, so she KNOWS where you're coming from. We had a freakin' blast and she did an excellent job setting my "Uptight" self at ease.

Hit her up at http://www.photographybychannin.com for pricing and details. ("Let This Dream Never End")

Jellyfish fans,

Chances are that when you think of your favorite Jellyfish song, unreleased track "Let This Dream Never End" isn't the first song that comes to mind. Well, US artist Mike Dees has taken this track that was only released in demo form on the Fan Club Box Set and given it the full studio treatment, complete with soaring female backing vocals and a rocking new arrangement. Check it out and see what you think!

Mike is also the only artist who is covering two Jellyfish tracks for this project - in addition to "Let This Dream Never End," Mike also did a brilliant cover of even-more-obscure Jellyfish track "Deliver." Mike's cover of "Deliver" is going to appear on the exclusive 3-track Bonus CD that we'll be giving to everyone who buys a copy of "Sensory Lullabies" from our online store.

You should definitely check out Mike Dees' MySpace page at:

www.myspace.com/mikedees23

Mike joined the Jellyfish Tribute Album Team relatively late in the process, chose two of the only remaining tracks that weren't yet spoken for, and promptly nailed them both!! The guy's a genius!

Note that we're looking for submissions of the ONE original Jellyfish track we don't yet have a cover of - "Long Time Ago". Check out our blog for details!

Cheers, and happy listening!
Alan and the Burning Sky Records Jellyfish Tribute Album Team

CD projects, check it out!

All the contracts are signed, eyes dotted, and tees crossed. I can now officially announce that we will be on two CD projects coming soon.

The first one is Wednesday Nights In Memphis, a benefit CD for St Jude's Target House.Vexar Entertainment does a great job bringing musicians to play for the kids at Target House, and here's your chance to help out. All proceeds from the sale of this CD will go to St Jude's Target House. Our song "Fields Of Light" will be featured. It comes out April 29th at a CD release show at Neil's that begins at 3 PM. $10 will get you in and we'll close out the show at 9 PM.

The next one is Sensory Lullabies:The Ultimate Tribute To Jellyfish. Burning Sky Records will be putting it out in June. Jellyfish is one of my all time favorite bands and I'm really honored to be part of this project. It has a stellar line-up of artists and really promises to be something special. We recorded an obscure track that never made it to the final albums called "Let This Dream Never End". We actually recorded another song called "Deliver" that wouldn't fit on the album. But you can get a taste of it at the Not Another Local Band podcast I sat in on a little while ago.
Three Month update

Wow, three months without a blog. Whole lotta stuff to talk about. So here's the updates.

My drummer, Sonya Forbes, had to step down after the "Wednesday Nights In Memphis" CD release. The gig was pretty bittersweet, as it was also the one year anniversary of this band line-up being together, to the day. She is pregnant and did shows for as long as she could until it got too hard. So a warm round of applause and congratulations to the best drummer I've ever worked with and one of my favorite people in the world. She's gonna be one ROCKIN' Mom! Congratulations Jeff & Sonya!

After scrambling to find a fill-in drummer for shows, I'd like to thank Tracy Ruble for stepping up to the plate. He's an excellent artist in his own right with his band The Fast Mothers(along with his twin brother Chris). To do a little name dropping, his dad is the late Tommy Ruble. Tommy was a member of the West Texas Music Hall Of Fame group, The Cavaliers, who were best known for their hit song, "Last Kiss," re-recorded in the late nineties by Pearl Jam. Tommy received The Memphis Song Of the Year Recording Artist award in 1980 for his performance on "Swinging Down In Memphis Town", The Memphis Press Billy Award for Top Pop Male Artist in 1981 and in 1991 he was selected to be the lead vocalist on "One Last Bridge" the official song of Memphis.

On the subject of other musical legends(and should-have been legends), I met Jody Stevens, the drummer from Big Star at a lecture given by Ardent Records. I was horribly star-struck, stammering and yammering like an idiot and I'm sure he thought I was insane. (Listen to "Uptight" again, boys and girls...ya write what ya know) At least I had the presence of mind to give him a demo. Big Star is one of my all-time favorite bands and it was an honor just to shake his hand. I just wish I had a picture of it.

For the past month, I've been appearing every Wednesday night at MO's Edge at a songwriter night hosted by Tommy Hoehn. Once again, I was totally star-struck when he introduced himself. I had been hanging out on the porch listening to them jam for 2 hours and had no idea. Some of you regular folks may not know who he is, but to this Power-pop guy, it's a big thing. Go here and get educated. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:a9fyxqu5ldje
http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=993249
http://www.lostinthegrooves.com/node/2474
He invited me to be a part of the regular Wednesday show and actually said he liked my stuff, so I'm pretty overwhelmed. It means a lot coming from someone I respect so much.

So come on out to MO's Edge (3521 Walker Ave) every Wednesday around 8PM and check it out. Heck, you might even catch me smiling once or twice. (Great, there goes my rep...)

(Mike Dees, Tommy Hoehn)

I also picked up another regular gig at the Songwriter's Supper Club at the Southern Crow Grill in Cordova, TN. Every Thursday night at 8 PM some great singer-songwriters get together Bluebird cafe style and swap songs and stories. Come out if you get the chance. The food is really good!

The website is finally up at www.mikedeesmusic.comand www.door23.com . There are a few MP3s for sale there as well if you're so inclined. Expect more merch to pop up in the future. I also took the plunge and made a page on Virb.

I'm in preparations to go into the studio and do some recording for the album pretty soon. The Jellyfish tribute should be out very soon as well. I was asked to contribute a track to a tribute to the Posies (another favorite band) by Burning Sky Records, so that will be recorded very soon as well. They requested that I take a stab at "Flood of Sunshine", and 8 minute psychedelic guitar tour-de-force, so it should be interesting to say the least.

Needless to say, it's been a weird, wild and wonderful whirlwind for the last few months. Thanks for all the support from everybody, I apreciate everything you do. From posting banners and coming to shows to even taking the time to listen, thank you.

Mike Dees
