This past Saturday, Sheehan and I set out to catch the 2:20 bus to watch one of the middle school kids from our after-school program, Donald, play in a rec basketball league. All we knew was that on Thursday he told us that his game was in Forest Park at 4. We had know clue where in Forest Park it was, but we figured we would have a little adventure, and we were right. I did a little bit of research and found out the bus schedules to get to Forest Park and then looked up a rec center there. We had to take the train to the airport and then catch a bus there at 3:20. While we were riding the train to the airport a super super old man was walking while the train started and fell on top of the woman sitting beside me and then fell face-first onto the floor. We couldn't tell if he was just really old, drunk, concussed or a combination of the three. When we got to the airport, an older Indian woman asked if we would help her carry her bags. We spent a while trying to figure out where she needed to go and how to get there once we figured it out. Finally we found the bus she was supposed to get on and she thanked us for our help, reached in her purse and gave us $5 and called us her sons. We then tried to find the bus we were supposed to get on and arrived there at around 3:30 to find that the bus had just left. The next bus wouldn't come until 4:20, so there was a good chance we would miss most of Donald's game if we even found the right place where it was. As we were trying to decide what to do, it started to rain and I started to get really frustrated. This day was not working out at all. We ended up waiting for the next bus and got off and checked out the rec center only to find elementary school kids playing. We were trying to figure out whether this was the right place and we had missed his game or if we should look for another place when we spotted a big Little Caesar's sign advertising their $5 hot and ready pizzas. We decided to use the $5 the Indian woman had given us and have dinner. There was a park behind the rec center and about ten minutes later while we were sitting on a picnic table, eating our delicious pizza, I saw Donald get out of a car and walk into the building. After eating, we went inside only to find out that Donald's game was at 5. It ended up being a great day and everything worked out. Just another example of the things that can happen when i am open to not being so constrained by my schedule and what i have to do. This is a lesson i am learning over and over this year.
