Just a quick little food post, this time about pre-prepared stuff you can get at the market.
The Saturday market (the smaller one on Wednesday too, for that matter) is actually split between two areas of town. One area encircles the Bergerac version of Notre Dame, …

One of the most disturbing quotes in this story 'Meanwhile in the Pacific war zone, working on the assumption that the only good Jap was a dead one, Admiral William Halsey of the US Navy urged his men to make 'monkey meat' out of the Japanese, and demanded that any …
From our terrace-

After a quick run down to the far side of the bridge-

The name of the boat closest to the camera is the 'Carpe Diem'...

I've been playing around with various flavors of free versions of Linux (ie, non-Redhat, SUSE, etc versions) lately.
Mostly Kubuntu, and recently Ubuntu (since Dell is shipping it now) and today I am downloading Debian (which, from my understanding, is the base of …
In-n-Out burgers, what McDonald's was probably like before becoming McGloboCorp. Notice the similarities in the sign-
For those living outside of California, Nevada and Arizona, you don't get the opportunity to have In-n-Out burgers; its still family owned so their expansion has remained exclusively in the West. This is largely due to all of their ingredients being delivered fresh every day- no frozen meat or fries, no prepackaged lettuce.
The menu is limited- burgers, cheesburgers and double burgers and cheesburgers. There is literally like four items on the 'burgers' side of the menu, no onion rings, no curly fries, in other words, just what you came for- a burger and fries.
That being said, there are more ways to have a burger there than just the standard burger, but none of it is on the 'menu'. Its on the not-so-secret 'secret' menu. There is the 3x3 and the 4x4, which indicates the number of burgers and pieces of cheese (which, in hindsight, I am a little disappointed I never tried), along with the protein style (no bun, burger wrapped in a lettuce leaf) and my personal favorite, Animal style.
But first, some other 'improvements' from In and Out-
Since In-n-Out is so popular, the whole moving the call box for the drive through back to the rear of the building doesn't really work anymore. Most locations have lines that extend far beyond the call box.

So, In-n-Out sends someone out to the car line to take your order, and even extends the line with 'cones' (because people are idiots and don't …

I had planned to do the In and Out update today, but instead I have to post about the marché nocturne last Friday night. I had planned to post earlier, but experienced internet problems over the weekend (not all that uncommon in the boondocks of France).
Hélène …

So, I have returned to my new home in Bergerac, France after a little over 2 months in LA. There will certainly be more thoughts on this subject, but to get things going just a small little food blog post.
First up is something that pretty much annoyed me everywhere …

I used to go to Farmer's markets here in LA (where I currently am for the next couple of weeks), but they suck compared to what you get in France. And more and more of the markets here are adding restaurant style stuff and stores, so its not even like a farmers market …

I don't mean to get all political with this thing, although maybe thats not such a bad idea.
I do recall reading a lot of the opposing viewpoints leading up to the war, but then again, I pretty much felt it was inevitable when I was watching 9/11. I'm pretty sure I …

What amazes me most about the former members of the current adminstration, and current if you've seen any Gonzales testimony, is that they are so unbelievably unrepentant. When you commit acts resulting in people dying, your sentence usually gives some weight to …

What is the difference between the US and Europe, you ask?
Besides the politics, the languages, the food, the people and the currency, of course?
Simple things, like store-bought cereal. And what you can do with it.
First, start with a box of cereal-
Notice how on the box it has pictures of big shavings of actual chocolate, not some chocolate flavored rice puff. "Fort en Chocolate Noir". That means 'lots'.
Place cereal in bowl-
