Monkeydog is me, Michael Dukes. This is music written, produced and mixed by one guy working quickly in a comfortable, familiar studio. I guess you could call it a side project. Which would make Mechanical Birds (www.mechanicalbirds.com) my front project.

The music, like the logo, really happened accidentally. After more than a year spent focusing exclusively on Mechanical Birds, I needed to gain a sense of perspective by stepping beyond the familiar. The idea for Monkeydog was to work with something approaching reckless abandon. To use toy keyboards and sad little third world drum machines gleaned from a hundred yard sales. To employ what struck me as preposterous alternate guitar tunings, often recording through cheap microphones. Like making sculpture out of junk. The thing I didn't plan on was handling vocal duties myself. It just sort of happened early one morning when I popped into the booth to record a quick guide vocal for the first Monkeydog song ever, Little Victories.

Anyway, fast forward a few months...with the encouragement of my indispensable friend Craig at peermusic, Monkeydog suddenly blossomed into an album's worth of material. A promotional CD which includes a separate instrumental version of each track was released in July, and is just now working its way across the globe and into the hands of music supervisors, ad creatives, editors, etc. This CD is titled Mutant Desire.
