i've never really been one to use loops..... seems like a non-creative way to be creative, in a paint by numbers kind of way. but earlier this week i watched a video interview with a musician who demonstrated how easy it is to manipulate premade drum loops in logic, so i decided to give it a shot.

it came out pretty well, but was a bit boring. then i thought about an idea i've had forever.... i've wanted for awhile to really get into other people's music. y'know? just analyze and figure out what it is that makes this song or that song so great. look at note patterns, and chord progressions, melodic figures.... just really figure out what's going on, and then apply some of those same ideas to my tracks.

so i did. i grabbed a midi track of a beatles song, and tore up a bit of it, resequenced it into different patterns, and set it up to play a synth or two over the top of my cut up drum loop track.

really, after all was said and done all i wound up keeping was the chord progression and a bit of rhythmic pattern. the structure and most of the melody and everything else that makes this song great i didn't use.

i remember reading an interview with....jon brion maybe? where he talked about how when he needs to write a song he just starts playing beatles songs on his guitar, until something new and exciting jumps out at him.

that's what i'm hoping to accomplish.

and, i do have a better understanding/appreciation for the song i analyzed/ripped off.

i'm curious to know if anyone that hears the track will recognize the original song.
