About

The meadowlark is a symbol of courage and hope. The small bird returns to the very place it is meant to be each spring without thought to what it might face once there. Returning so early in the spring, as they do, to a part of the country given to springs long in coming they often face what seems like winter. They are confident that spring is here, though not yet seen, and that summer is coming. So they sing. They take their place among what is and proclaim what is to come.

I was first introduced to this idea by John Eldrege in the final pages of his book, The Journey of Desire. He writes that upon hearing the meadowlark's song on one particularly miserable spring day he heard God's urging to him: Do not throw away your confidence... Do not budge from your perch, but sing your song, summer confident, sure of my great goodness toward you. That very book, written in the midst of a season of life that very much seemed like winter, was his song in return.

my.Meadowlark is my song. It is my expression of the hope I have in what is and what is to come. It is my hope in the restoration of the creative and the worth of the arts. It is my movement toward that hope.
