July 24th is summer. Guaranteed to be one of the hottest days of the entire year. When humidity is in full effect. The days when old people die locked up in their forgotten homes. The week when all your friends are away at camp or on vacation.
On July 24th 1983, George Brett hit a walk-off 2-run homerun against rival pitcher Goose Gossage of the New York Yankees. After rounding the bases, the umpire nixed the homer, on the grounds that too much pine tar was on his bat. Livid, Brett charged the official with a fury that has never since been matched by a professional baseball player. He was thrown out of the game and the Yankees went home victors.
July 24th is ten days after Bastille Day, twenty days after the Fourth of July.
July is the seventh month of the year. 24/7.
On July 24, 1983 I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. No professional Philadelphia sports team has won a championship since.
