Just when I think Jon's family and mine couldn't be any more different, I'm faced with glaring (if somewhat amusing) evidence to the contrary.
Yesterday, Jon and I met up with his parents and sister, Jennifer, at the Grand Lux Cafe at the local Rich Bastard Mall, where we were served afternoon tea. Champagne was served before the tea, but I passed. Never did like the stuff. There were about seven or eight teas on the menu, I think, and I opted for peppermint tea as I hadn't tried it before. Not bad, but not as good as my lavender tea with candied violets that Jennifer bought me (at the same RBM).
Presently, we were served artfully-arranged open face petit-fours sandwiches on small rectangular plates, four apiece. One was tomato and basil, one cucumber and watercress, one chicken salad, and one egg salad. I ate none of them because I am a ridiculously finicky eater. Luckily, everyone at the table was already aware of this.
Once those plates were cleared away, the waiters brought us each a two-tiered iron rack containing various pastries and sweets. I ate the scones first (I'd never had them before) and discovered that I fucking love scones. They are the best thing ever and I want more. The other sweets--tarts, meringue, cream puff, etc.--paled in comparison to the awesomeness that is the scone.
After we were all done with our goodies, Jon and I ordered coffees: a cappuccino for me and a Grand Coffee (coffee + grand marnier topped with whipped cream and served in a fancy glass) for him. I didn't have the heart to tell anyone that the cappuccinos at just about any gas station taste better... But I had a good time.
Later, before we left the mall but after we'd said goodbye to Jon's parents, Jennifer took us to the Louis Vuitton store to show us the $1,400 handbag that her husband will have to buy for her when he gets back in town. She looked like a kid at Christmas trying that thing on in front of the full-length mirror; it was pretty entertaining. From there it was off to her place, where we watched the last episode of the first season of Veronica Mars, an old movie called "Cutting Edge" that I'd never heard of before but enjoyed, ate alfredo cheese pizza, and played a lengthy game of dominoes that Jon actually won for a change.
So. Yesterday was a good day, and tonight should be pretty shiny as well. Even though money's tight, Jon and I are going to The Church to see Cadaver Cabaret. They put on a great show last year when they warmed up the crowd for Voltaire, and I'm hoping this one will be similar. I'm also hoping Jon gets off work in time to get us there before all the good vantage points are taken...
