The story of New Amsterdam (as told by Garrett DeRossett):
Some bands start by neighborhood friendships. Others start by touring with existing bands. Still others form with a general love of music, and with members being in the right place at the right time.
New Amsterdam started at Worldview Academy.
For a year prior to that summer, I had jumped in and out of one-man bands, and had a tenuous spot in a band called Hello Edwards with my friend. At Worldview Academy, I met Logan Gates, Elizabeth Ainslie, and Angela Gonzales. In September 2007, fed up with music projects going nowhere, I offered Logan a spot in an Americana/Folk project I wanted to start. Being the guitarist he was, Gates accepted, and soon became the forefront of the band. After picking up guitar, I joined in with a little electric action as well as keys, and we soon had a "band".
In late November 2007, a random offer by Elizabeth Ainslie to help out vocals on my newest solo project Skyline Drive's Christmas album made me realize that we could definately use a new singer in the band. Less than two weeks later, Angela Gonzales mentioned that she played violin, and her brother played flute. Coincidental though it was, it seemed to be a perfect fit.New Amsterdam was complete.
One problem. We all lived in different cities, seperated by many miles.
Email was the answer to that problem, as well as the computer program Audacity. The internet, cruddy mics, and Audacity have recently become our best friends.
There you go. The story of New Amsterdam.
