Old Lost John is the musical project of Swedish songsmith Tomas Thunberg. Once a woodsman and a horse-keeper, he now lives in the city of Malmo, writing and recording his own music. "The Ghost of Calder Mountain" is an album probably best described as dusky, haunting americana folk with an old-timey feeling and sometimes slightly Celtic touch. Sparse arrangements with mandolin, pump organ and squeeze-box supplying the vocals and guitars, lyrics about fear and desire, love and mistrust. The characters in these songs struggle to come to terms with themselves and their emotional conflicts, and it's all delivered in stark poetic images both vivid and bleak. It's not all doom-and-gloom however, and room is given for twisted humour as well as a couple of lighter and more hopeful songs.
