About

The son of a United Nations diplomat, Omar spent many of his early years traveling the world, soaking up the musical traditions of such exotic locales as Afghanistan, Cuba, France, and the Czech Republic. By the age of 14, he was considered a piano prodigy. In his late teens, he discovered the boundary-pushing sounds of Jean Michel Jarre (France), Kitaro (Japan), and Vangelis (Greece), and began to absorb their independent musical influences. At the same time, Omar remained intrigued by such classical composers as Bach and Mozart, and used much of their thematic coherence, comprehensible structure, and clear rhythmic control to craft his own original compositions.

The marriage of the Modern and the Classical culminated in the release of OPAL FIRE in September 2002 under the Real Music label, his first recording as lead artist. Listeners were mesmerized by Omar's musical artistry, emotional intensity, romantic subtexts, and globally inspired textures. Reviewers were just as impressed: "Tales that open the heart and touch the soul." (Steve Ryals, New Age Retailer) "Omar creates a keyboard driven tour de force of worldly textures and exotic rhythms." (Chris Spector, Midwest Record Recap) The record soared to #14 on the Billboard New Age chart.

Omar's versatility as both a soloist and accompanist are also showcased on his newest release, FREE AS A BIRD. Working with such brilliant musicians as Eric Marienthal of The Rippingtons, Ramon Stagnaro, Pedro Eustache and Charlie Bisharat from Yanni's orchestra, and keyboardist/producer Gregg Karukas, he achieves a remarkable synthesis of New Age and progressive jazz elements. Eleven great songs, including Dancing With The Wind, Flight of Mystery, and the title track Free As A Bird, feature the beautiful rhythmic patterns and exotic free-spirited compositions that have become Omar's trademark.

"For all the lush production values, its Omar's piano beautiful in its elegance and rich in its quiet rhythmic power that proves the most unforgettable element", wrote Jonathan Widran of FREE AS A BIRD in the All Music Guide. "Sure to be on my Top 10 for 2004", enthused Kathy Parsons of Solo Piano Publications.

A compelling melodist, a disciplined romantic, and a mood-maker extraordinaire, Omar offers a world of music as diverse as the places he's lived in. With FREE AS A BIRD, he has earned a place among the world's best contemporary instrumental artists.

I love your new song "Run Away With Me". The Indian tabla and the violin in your composition blends well with the piano accompaniment. I give two thumbs up!

Shireen, Jul 7, 2007:

Omar,

I see your have travelled the world. Have you ever been to Malaysia because that is where I'm originally from. I wish the entire world would be like Malaysia where peace and unity exist amidst a very diverse society.

Have a great weekend,
