The Pavement Special 1 is a magazine and compilation cd that was launched at an event last year December at the Bohemian in Johannesburg South Africa.
It was initiated by Lloyd Gedye who maintains the Isolation blog.
The second cd is to be launched this Saturday at The Bohemian in Milpark, Johannesburg.
The Pavement Special organisers selected the One Minute Trolley Dash 'band' Moranga for inclusion in the second Pavement Special cd.
One Minute Trolley Dash records took the decision to remove Moranga from the Pavement Special 2 cd as it is not supporting the artists concerned, particularly given that the cds are for sale at the price of R80 each.
I appreciate and value Lloyd Gedye and Michael MacGarry's support of SA music as well as his blog being one that I regularly check.
The layout of the first Pavement Special cd was of a high standard with great photos, I bought four extra copies (at full price) of last year's first Pavement Special, which I sent to friends. Some likened it to fanzines of year's ago.
I recognise that there are costs involved in the production of the Pavement Special issues but the payment of the artists should have been factored into that cost. At least the mechanical licensing as is a requirement for all CDT manufactured cds.
The artists are not being paid in any way for the usage of their recorded material, no mechanical rights are being paid, no percentage of sales and no recording rights are paid at all.One Minute Trolley Dash records does not endorse such song usages. The fact remains that there are tracks on the cds that are manufactured by CDT with the Pavement Special organisers maintaining that they will pay no mechanical rights or recording rights. CDT is required to ensure that all mechanical rights are paid prior to manufacture.NORM, the mechanical rights organisation to protect the rights of the artists wasn't aware of this cd or the previous one.
Such exploitation of the artists and composers should not be allowed to continue. If the artist is unpublished, a direct payment is required to be made to them for the mechanical (and recording rights) rights. There are to be 500 CDT manufactured Pavement Special cd.A potential gross sales figure of R40 000 can be derived through the sales of the cds but the artists aren't even getting a percentage of the sales. I recognise that the artists are getting exposure through the cd but it is a limited exposure. It is still their material that is being used which needs to be done in the correct manner and to fully support the artist. The public who buy the cd and attend the launch gig are generally not aware that the artists are being taken advantage of.I am aware that Lloyd Gedye are and Michael MacGarry are the only ones involved with Pavement Special with all responsibilities falling on themselves.
I appreciate the initiative, it is a great project but it should fully support the artists instead of false support and exploitation.
