Steven Berkoff's "On the Waterfront"

If any of you good people should find yourselves in London, you might like to check out Steven Berkoff's stage version of Budd Schulberg's classic movie screenplay from 1954, "On the Waterfront" (Elia Kazan). This play is served by a cast of fabulous actors who, under the inventive & witty direction of maitre Berkoff (who also plays mobster boss, Johnny Friendly), manage to take minimalism to an unexplored pinnacle of perfection. By minimalism, I mean that there are no props & fancy décor. It's all done with chairs, lighting, percussion &, above all, everybody's total commitment to dance the monster home. What an experience ! After about 12 seconds, I was fully into it (as were my friends) & happy to stay that way 'til the end.

As far as I'm concerned - & I am VERY concerned - a special mention must go to the entire cast...., but I feel I should name : Simon Merrells (Terry Malloy), Vincenzo Nicoli (Father Barry), Sean Buckley (Pop Doyle) , & the actress who played his daughter, Edie, on February 9th. As I said, they are all fantastic, so, if you can, do go & see it....... & you'll love Steven Berkoff, I'm sure. The dear man is just so charismatic.
