We know better than to blog about business, but this is actually the story of the day and it starts with a secret:
no one bought any of Greg Antrim's Kelly's prints in the first two weeks they were up.
It sounds weird, right? For some folks they're too cheap, for others they're too expensive: five bucks for a print? And what's an "unlimited edition," anyway?
Then a handful sold last night and we were very pleased. And set out to actually start making some good-looking great-looking prints from office-supply technology of expert ink washes . Seriously, he draws really well. Exceedingly well.
And when we showed him the first good batch of prints today, he looked at them for about four seconds before saying: "They're black and white."
"Yeah?"
"The drawings are in color."
"What do you mean?"
"Um... that's yellow paper and that ink there is a little blue-ish, and there's some sepia in the edge... and... seriously. Were you going to print them black and white?"
Seriously: we thought they were black and white. We are not printmakers by trade; we are only the shipping department. And we have foggy mole eyes.
So it was back to the drawing board, in which we learned that 300 dots is not enough dots. And 600 dots is not enough dots.
But twelve hundred dots and we might just have enough dots and colors to send these out tomorrow. Then the machines will just start churning and never stop until the ink runs out.
So, once again (and actually, now, no bluff) we have really beautiful, incredibly inexpensive prints by Greg Antrim Kelly.
