There's something you don't know about Paper Champion, and that's what you'll like about them. Unfamiliar beats, soundscapes, and unusual melodies lace a style of heavy rock which reminds that you're listening to something different. Let it creep up on you, take your time, but don't expect that of the band's trajectory.
Released in November 2007, Paper Champion's debut EP continues to delight reviewers both at home and abroad with its diverse range of sounds; their disparate influences combining to create music that flows from progressive to indie to alternative in a space of 25 minutes.
It was recorded at Brisbane's Modern Music Studios, home to recordings from such luminaries as The Butterfly Effect, The Red Paintings, Dead Letter Circus and Small Mercies, and produced by Rick Hollis, who previously has worked with bands such as Shihad and Sunk Loto.
Paper Champion have played alongside national touring acts such as Dead Letter Circus, The Red Paintings, Mammal and Birds of Tokyo. In the wake of their debut EP release, Paper Champion were featured as 'Homegrown Talent' on MySpace and selected for a FasterLouder podcast along with acts like The Mercy Arms, Damn Arms and the Mess Hall. Singles 'Teeth' and 'Undone' have received strong support from independent radio. In June they'll play the prestigious Come Together Festival at Luna Park. Things are happening fast, hop on for the ride.
Here's what some lovely people have said about the band:
"Very strong... this debut EP highlights their diversity."
- Jonathon Moran, The Sunday Telegraph
"Their music achieves a strange juxtapositioning of melodic ambience and pounding rhythms that highlight the band's versatility and a burgeoning potential to create the punk anthems that have marked the rise of bands like the Butterfly Effect."
- Rebecca Warren, Newcastle Music Directory
"Heavy and soft, complex and simple, acrobatic and consistent; Paper Champion is all these things... a good album with a dash of brilliance thrown in every now and then, and is undoubtedly a debut EP of which any band would be proud."
- Brad Dixon, OzProg.com
"This is a very promising self released EP that shows a band trying to forge some new ground in the very stagnant realm of hard rock."
- Rick Gebhardt, DecoyMusic.com
"An outstanding debut for a band that is willing to explore the complex aesthetic elements which make up a musical experience: dynamics structure, timbre, texture, sound, silence and articulation in all its forms."
- Albert Gestal, The Stix Magazine
