Paste is one of the fastest-growing independently published music magazines in the country. We pride ourselves in being the premier magazine for people who still enjoy discovering new music, prize substance and songcraft over fads and manufactured attitude, and appreciate quality music in whatever genre it might inhabit--indie rock, Triple-A, Americana, folk, blues, jazz, etc. We strive to bring readers thoughtful analysis on the best in music, film, books and other aspects of popular (and alternative) culture.

BOOKSHELF TO SCREEN: EIGHT NEW CLASSICS BECOMING MOVIES THIS FALL (AND BEYOND)

Last week, we took a look at seven old favorite books getting the film treatment this fall (and beyond—damn you, Alice in Wonderland, March is too long to wait!). A few readers piped up to ask inquire the absence of Brief Interviews with Hideous Men in that roundup, but never fear, it wasn't forgotten. David Foster Wallace's short story collection, like the other seven picks on this week's list, just aren't quite "old favorite" material yet—but check back in ten years or so. By then, we may know better which of these titles will stand the test of time, and how their film adaptations stack up

The Road
Release date: Nov. 25, 2009
Source material: Cormac McCarthy's 2006 novel could be heavy lifting, but the director was specifically tapped for the project before the book was even published, so we're feeling good about it (despite the overwrought trailer).
Director: John Hillcoat
Screenwriter: Joe Penhall
Starring: Viggo Mortensen , Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron
(Watch trailer here).

Youth In Revolt
Release date: Oct. 30, 2009
Source material: C.D. Payne's Youth In Revolt: The Journals of Nick Twisp, published in 1993, back when Michael Cera was but a wee man-boy.
Director: Miguel Arteta
Screenwriter: Gustin Nash
Starring: Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis , Portia Doubleday

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs
Release date: Sept. 18, 2009
Source material: Judi and Ron Barrett's 1978 picture book, which framed the tale of spontaneous culinary precipitation as a charming breakfast-time story, rendered in charming, simple illustrations. But, shamefully, food falling from the sky seems to be the only common element between the book and the movie. Excuse my ire, but this is literally the first book I remember reading in kindergarten, and I feel it deserves far more than the obvious CGI, inane mad-scientist protagonist and superfluous backstory Sony's conjured up for it.
Directors/screenwriters: Phil Lord, Chris Miller
Starring: Voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell, Neil Patrick Harris , Mr. T, Al Roker (yes, really) and more

The Lovely Bones
Release date: Jan. 15, 2010
Source material: Alice Sebold's breathtaking, heartbreaking first novel, published in 2002.
Director: Peter Jackson
Screenwriters: Jackson, Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens
Starring: Saoise Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon

WHY TAYLOR SWIFT (AND YOU) SHOULDN'T BE UPSET THAT KANYE UPSTAGED HER AT THE VMAS

<img src="http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/kanye_swift_main.jpg"

A scant few minutes into last night's MTV Video Music Awards, a Hennessy-sauced Yeezy stormed the stage and kicked down Taylor Swift's sandcastle: "Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'm going to let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time." Drama ensued: various B and C-list musicians feigned disgust at the breach of decorum, and West was promptly ejected from the show and ran home to compose a half-sincere apology on his blog (which he later removed).
We can be sure that 'Ye didn't do it because Swift isn't down with hip-hop (she most certainly is.) And it's important to remember that MTV has a history of staging stunts like these for major televised events (Brüno's ass in Eminem's face, anyone?) But let's assume that it's for real, and that the music world has just had its Joe Wilson moment.

It's a waste of energy to be breathlessly offended on Swift's behalf and posse up into Team Taylor and Team Kanye. After all, do you really think that Swift's going to be upset that Kanye got drunk and made a fool of himself? Not when she's got a swimming pool of money to come home to. For performing artists, celebrities and every permutation thereof, thick skin is a required part of the job. If they're not going to lose sleep over it, you shouldn't either.

At this point, Kanye's rants at the VMAs are something of an MTV institution, nearly as venerable as the moon man statue or painfully unfunny VJs...

What's Happening at Monolith Festival?

<img src="http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/lists/2009/09/11/monolith.jpg"
Seven Non-Headlining Bands We Can't Wait to See at Monolith this Weekend

The Monolith festival begins at Morrison, Colo.'s breathtakingly gorgeous Red Rocks Amphitheatre this Saturday. Paste will be on-site covering the event, which features a stellar lineup of artists including The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Girl Talk, Of Montreal, The Mars Volta, Method Man & Redman, M. Ward, The Walkmen, Phoenix, Passion Pit and Doom.

But with Monolith's stacked, two-day, multiple-stage lineup, there's a whole lot going on in the daylight hours, too. Here are seven bands that'll have us to the festival grounds bright and early.

1. Frightened Rabbit (Saturday, Sept. 12 - 3:30 p.m. Esurance stage)
Fresh off their sophomore release, The Midnight Organ Fight, Scottish rockers Frightened Rabbit are tactfully versed in walking the fine line between the coarse and baroque, but it all sounds like poetry when embodied by Scott Hutchinson's firm accent. The band swelled from Hutchinson's side project to a four-piece, a fitting reflection of their delicately stacking song structures. Their live record, Liver, Lung, FR!, is a demonstration of their subdued side, but no facades here. Frightened Rabbit in concert is much like having a beer with a best friend. Their most endearing characteristic to look for will be their genuine delivery of lines like, "You won't find love in a whore."

Frightened Rabbit - "Behave"...
