Montreal-based art-rock quartet Patrick Watson's album Close to Paradise swells from folk infused indie pop to orchestrated flights of ethereal whimsy. The band Patrick Watson carries the name of its chief songwriter and frontman, and their sound is as diverse as the namesake who's more comfortable referencing Debussy and Satie than Jeff Buckley or Devendra Banhart. With influences ranging from contemporary classical to underwater photography, Patrick Watson's dreamy soundscapes are at once subtle and intense, sparse and lush, contradictions that create a gorgeous genre-spanning oeuvre as unique as the man at its helm.
One of NME's 10 best of SXSW 2007.
Patrick Watson's mix of traditional country and electro is like nothing you have ever heard before and, boy, is NME excited. - Rebecca Robinson - NME (May 2007)
