Phoenix and the Turtle is known for taking its listeners on a musical journey. The fusion of instrumental rock and classical strings, while incorporating sparse vocals, lends to the uniqueness of this southern California quartet's sound. Phoenix and the Turtle formed in 2003 as a collaboration for a friend's funeral.
The band blends a mixture of styles, instruments, and structures to create their sound. Taking cues from bands such as The Album Leaf, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the band has intensely powerful instrumentation. Furthermore, mixing in carefully placed male and female vocals (Blonde Redhead, Sonic Youth) gives the band a unique edge over other instrumental bands.
The 2004 release of their first album, "Sunday is a Good Day for Relaxing," helped complement their astonishing live performances. After expanding to a greater audience, Phoenix and the Turtle released their second full-length, "Asleep in America."
"The band delicately weaves an intricate aural web of haunting melody and ambiance reminiscent of Black Heart Procession at times, but Phoenix and the Turtle serve it up on an epic scale." - IE Weekly
"Phoenix and the Turtle blended politics with sheer musical beauty, creating a powerful message without seeming preachy or arrogant." - UCR Highlander
"This California band will be right up your alley if you love Blonde Redhead, Black Heart Procession, The Album Leaf and even Sonic Youth." - My Old Kentucky Blog
"The overall effect is sweet, lush, and delicate." - Speed of Dark
"Asleep in America, the second full-length release from Yucaipa's Phoenix and the Turtle, is a somber journey through perfectly aligned trees, gaping wounds and haunted gardens." - The Rockit
