[3"cd] no more sad dreams (2007)
the objects dont need us (2007)
putting holes into october skies (2006)
closer and closer, through the wires
on THE OBJECTS DON'T NEED US by phon°noir
by jörg albrecht
Far off, up there in the North, Canada, Alaska or even further, far away from us. The earth is on its way around the sun, but we don't know just where we are. All we know is, summer always sees other places first.
Around here somebody is singing, and so do the guitars, while bellish notes are hit on a toy piano. Moving keys and moving strings while moving his vocals to the limits, always on the edge of whisper: Matthias Grübel. But here, in the very North of music they call him another name, they whisper when they say it, whisper and whisper and whisper: phon°noir.
A year now, a little more than a year, in all quietness [slowdown], one year since phon°noir tore open the autumn skies above him. Putting holes into october skies as he would say. For sure, we have not forgotten about that now that we are about to meet him again. And there, while we raise our antennas towards the sky and into the snowflakes, somebody is already singing, singing through the wires, before we are close enough to tell who it is. Singing through the wires that lead all the way to Gullholmen: Matthias.
So this time it is october again, and even if the objects don't need us, Matthias needs them, making use of them with even greater passion. This time he fits more instruments, more twists and turns into his tunes, also more rhythms and more voices. We find him deuetting with Marie-Sophie Kanske sings about flammable paperhouses, Anna-Lyne Williams assists in measuring a future we once had. Calika sends over some droning chords from the British Isles, while somewhere in the background someone is bowing a cello, acoustic cello, electric cello: Fried Dähn. And through all this it suddenly seems like the snow is slowly melting. As if the music came closer and closer.
And this is the movement of phon°noir's new record: closer and closer, thorugh the wires, and into the heart. At first we are far from a world we know, but soon we forget about the distance, we can walk from here, and in the end,in the end we can miss the future. Now that we are invisible, the only thing that's not is our ears. Invisible with phon°noir. Invisible at last.
about //
phon°noir is Matthias Grübel. His debut "putting holes into october skies" was released on quatermass in april 2006. In November 2007. "the objects don't need us" followed on legendary sub rosa label, mother of quatermass. Prior to the release of the album, the video for "my paperhouse on fire" was streamed on myspace, phononoir.de and round here on virb as a virtual single release. Both albums were written and recorded in Berlin, Matthias' hometown for almost six years now. When taking time off from phon°noir Matthias collaborates with author Jörg Albrecht on live-text/sound-performances as well as radioplays under the moniker phonofix. In early 2008 he hooked up with Simon Kealoha aka Calika to form the experimental pop group Zermatt. Occasionally he also contributes music to film or theatre plays, in spring 2007 he soundtracked a production at Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin.
