Piano Girl (aka Am Y)

Pianogirl is Am Y.

A Bachelor of Arts graduate from the National University of Singapore, her first calling was as a secondary school teacher. After leaving the profession, she turned to music full-time while pursuing a Masters degree in Education.

Today, Pianogirl teaches, performs, and composes classical, jazz, pop, and a wide variety of other genres of piano music.

Though classically trained, much of her music is improvised, based on a random, sporadic motif that hits her at that particular moment in time.

Call it a spontaneous snapshot of time, space, mood and emotions, if you will, complete with momentary hesitations and slip-ups - an exact replay is never possible as no score is ever used, and improvisation details differ each time.

All songs and motifs are original unless otherwise stated.

Enjoy.

Here we have a recording I did one fine day in 2008 of the classic "Music Box Dancer" (originally composed by the brilliant Frank Mills) on the Clavinova (CVP 405). At least 3 instrument layers were used, all spontaneously recorded on the spot.

This song is part of the ever-expanding "Pianogirl plays..." series, in which I play song covers (i.e. songs not composed by myself) and other requests.

Something a little different from traditional piano. I recorded this on the Yamaha Clavinova (CVP405), a digital piano capable of multi-layering tracks. More spontaneous improvisation, but this time, I first recorded myself playing the main chord progression (Track 1), then did an impromptu melody over it (Track 2). The idea of 2 piano layers is a modification of Bill Evans' concept in his CD, Conversation with Myself. God, I love the man!

Playing around with several short motifs in my head, thinking of how to develop them, yet at the same time trying not to analyse myself too much. Just kind of followed my emotions for the chord progressions on this one. Inspired by Chick Corea and Bill Evans.
