What is now Pilot Coat began in late 2005 in Athens, GA. Three young high school students, Sebastain Afonso, Weston Davis, and Andrew Park, met and discussed their own individual musical endeavors. After a while, half-joking, half-serious they suggested that they start a band together. A few days went by with nothing, but they then decided that they would give it a shot and play music together. The first few rehearsals with the trio were mostly humor based. The first song written and recorded was titled "Chocolate in my Pocket" which chronicled a real life event. Another song within the first week or so was "Snowshoes." Though the new band's lyrical content was comical, the musical aspect of the tracks were noticeably powerful.
At the same time, another musician named John French was attending the same school. He knew the trio, but not well enough to know about their musical endeavors. John was in fact a piano player, desiring to start a band. He had written many songs on his own, but wanted a band to make them better. As fate would have it, the comical trio was looking for a piano player. Sebastian approached John one day with the offer, and what is now Pilot Coat began to form.
From the first few practices emerged the first stages of songs like "Deserve" and "Happy Medium." Once the four of the current members began to play more and more, it was evident that another addition was needed.
That is the point in time when mutual friend of the band, Josh DeRamus. He was known to be a drummer and proved to be just the man for the job. It was also from these first few weeks, that the name "Pilot Coat" emerged. There are many myths about the origins of the name, ranging from plane crashes to skyscrapers. The true story remains a mystery.
The band then moved on to do shows locally. They preformed everywhere from battle of the bands, to the local charity rock concerts. Pilot Coat writes from the heart. Someone once said, "Write what you know." That is what they do. Pilot Coat continues to create music and share it with people, and are honored for that opportunity.
