Women above the age of 55 were sequesterd to one remote are of tgeh islance while those under twelve were removed al together.

What wasn;t expected was that all remaining inhabitants took ot the sea, en masse. Swimming far into the ocean until ultimately out of sight. Clearly the researchers apporach was flawed.
