"..and all audible musical sound is given us for the sake of harmony, which has motions akin to the orbits in our soul, and which, as anyone who makes intelligent use of the arts knows, is not to be used, as is commonly thought, to give irrational pleasure, but as a heaven-sent ally in reducing to order and harmony any disharmony in the revolutions within us." Plato
R2 Records began in 1999 with the purpose of giving exposure to quality soulful music that was being increasingly marginalised by the music industry. While major labels, radio stations and magazines became ever focused on a small number of big selling acts, R2 saw an opportunity to provide a platform for all the great music that was being ignored, be it House, Hip-Hop, Soul, Latin, Afro or Jazz.
The initial releases were mostly compilations from dance music greats like Paul 'Trouble' Anderson, Ron Trent, Osunlade and Louie Vega, (MAW), all giving their take on contemporary dance music, the emphasis always on uncompromising quality and supreme mixing. R2 has gone on to release original material, again with the criteria that the music should have soul and calibre. Having released the debut album by live 'House' band Tortured Soul and New York luminary MKL, 2007 saw releases from heavy hitters like Osunlade, (as The Piscean Group), Ron Trent, Karizma and Alton Miller.
The line-up for 2008 is looking formidable, with releases from Japanese deep house jazz group Rhythm Of Elements, the debut album by Swedish soul sensation Kissey Asplund, the follow up to Karizma's award winning album 'A Mind Of Its Own', (Version 2.0 with remixes and new tracks), and a return to compilations with the heavy hitter combination of Rich Medina & Bobbito putting together a double cd of afro and latin dancefloor killahs, to name a few.
