So it has been awhile... 3 days ago

It's been a busy year, but not so much musically. That's about to change.

Billboard

Raised in Austin, Texas, multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Rachel Rhodes, was bound to end up making music one day. The genetic combination of two opera singers who loved jazz and rock 'n' roll just as much, she picked up a violin at the age of 3, and things went out of control from there. Alto sax, guitar, bass, cello, tenor banjo, lap steel, and ukulele followed. Rachel's been writing songs since she was 11, and has never tired of the process.

Her voice has been described as "smoky, sexy, steamy", "golden" and "like a lit candle." No one has described her style. At least not to her face.

She has more indie debt than indie cred.

The downloadable songs featured here are mostly covers requested by friends and destined to become a free cd under the name, A Tribe Called Request. She is currently working on demos for her first cd, Que Dalle, featuring songs in both French and English.

Shout out to...Geese!

Do you like the song "Aquamarine" covered on this very album? The man who wrote it has also written a ton of other great songs for his band, Geese. Think Pixies, think Weezer, think Cheap Trick. Then stop thinking, and go listen and download. You'll be glad you did!

Thanks for your comment. Your voice sounds amazing, like classically trained or something. Love the post-it note picture as well, made me chuckle :)

I haven't heard this album. Sounds fantastic, though! A comparison to John Zorn? Am I cool enough to merit this? Well, maybe one day you will get to play Austin, but try to hit it in the Winter, very early Spring or Fall. Il fait trop chaud tout le reste de l'année! I grew up there, and I love it, but France was calling me... I'll do my best to catch your show on the 19th! I read on the net that the venue was less than spectacular. I hope you don't have any problems!

Porco Rosso says:

Hi, Thanks for your kind comment. I love your cover of "Aux Armes, etc.", have you ever heard the tribute album made by Downtown NY artists, including Medesky, Martin & Wood, Marc Ribot, Mike Patton, Sean Lennon, Blonde Redhead and John Zorn. There's a cover of "Contact" by the latter, and he did all the samples with his mouth. Your cover reminds me of that. Hope to see you at the Café Montmartre ! Cheers, Yann from Porco Rosso. P.S : What a strange idea to live in the Grey Paris, when you used to live in this wonderful city of Austin, TX. I would die to attend City Limits Festival there.
