"Rainbow Around the Sun" is a musical odyssey from the mind of singer/actor Matthew Alvin Brown. Brown wrote the songs for "Rainbow" while living in Oklahoma City, where he acted in local musical theater shows and performed with his band The Fellowship Students.
In 2006, when the album was finished, Matt immediately set his mind upon adapting it into other forms. The first of these was a "Rainbow Around the Sun" feature film, co-written by Brown and Kevin Ely, and directed by Ely and Beau Leland. The "Rainbow" movie world premiered at South By Southwest in 2008 and made its international debut later that year as part of the Athens International Film Festival.
Having spent more than a year starring in productions of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," Brown longed to create another adaptation of the album, this time as a live performance. Brown enlisted the help of Producer/Director Nick Demos and writer Tom Stuart to build an entirely new vision for "Rainbow," focusing on bringing the album to life as a prog-rock concert with a story.
The stage show of "Rainbow Around the Sun" is a Circus-like dissection of broken hearts, life through a liquor bottle, and rebirth through loss, set to an eclectic rock and roll soundtrack, and held together by Brown's performance.
In all it's forms, "Rainbow Around the Sun" is a work that wears its heart on its sleeve, created by artists who believe that music can be a healing force in life, if you let it.
"Rainbow Around the Sun" will make it's onstage debut as a "Next Link" participant of the 2009 New York Musical Theater Festival. Tickets can be purchased online through the NYMF website.
