I know that all I'm doing is asking questions, but this is legitimate. . . I think. : ) I recently spoke with a best-friend/fellow designer/recent graduate in California and we were both lamenting for the same reasons. All employers seem to want to people who know Flash, period. What ever happened to classic print design? How in the WORLD could it become obsolete? I realize the steady demand for new websites, but there is no possible way that a magazine could be designed in flash. Or a 3-dimensional package, for that matter. Is this only a problem of marketplace infiltration? I hear ads on the radio advertising for all the art schools here in Atlanta. Since when was radio advertising used to convince people to become artists? Being an artist comes from within. You just KNOW. If you grew up never caring, and never developing your creative eye, but a field in art sounds great, please don't do it! It's not easy! Starving artists really DO still exist! Only do it if you feel called. You have to feel it in your bones, in your soul, and be willing to take shit no matter how good you are. Paying your dues does exist. VERY few people get great jobs right out of college in art, and the ones that do weren't necessarily more talented, they were just in the right place at the right time. I only hope that when I get my "lucky break", that I won't forget all of this. Being caring, and giving a talented designer a job even if it means not hiring the more qualified-better off-candidate, can really help a business grow... maybe not at first, but in the long run. My friend also believed that some people might be intimidated by the talent they are hiring, and are thinking long-term, ie; worried about being superseded. She also said that maybe some companies just constantly interview to see "what's out there, what's fresh", not to hire, but to stay cutting edge. It's sad, really. Not the cutting edge part, just the cutting people (a)part.
