Inauguration eve | Told you so

Barack Obama is a beautiful man for these times.
He glows with youth, confidence, new possibilities.
Let's not forget though who bought and paid for him.

Maybe he'll overcome his corporate masters
Maybe he'll reach across the aisle and pull the saints of the patrician class into a new populist realpolitik that says plainly that wealth was redistributed upward through radical tax code revisions, and now some portion of it must be redistributed back to ordinary people who buy food, and houses, and appliances, and cars.

Whether the vehicle is a WPA or CCC or a New Deal or a program of firing squads, it matters little.

First, though, the question is how soon will Barack Obama break our hearts?

In honor of what's to come, here are the lyrics of the five most heartbreaking songs of betrayal from the post-Camelot period. (Cheese notwithstanding).

1. "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" Looking Glass
(Elliot Lurie) There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
And talk about their homes
And there's a girl, in this harbor town
And she works, laying whiskey down
They say "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whiskey and wine
The sailors say "Brandy, you're a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
Yeah your eyes could steal a sailor
From the sea.

"Brandy, wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the north of Spain
A locket, that bears the name
Of a man that Brandy loved
He came, on a summer's day
Bringing gifts, from far away
But he made it clear, he couldn't stay
No harbor was his home
The sailors said
"Brandy, you're a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
But my life, my lover, my lady
Is the sea.

"Yeah Brandy used to watch his eyes when he told his sailor's story
She could feel the ocean fall and rise, she saw its raging glory
But he had always told the truth,
Lord he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
At night, when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man, who's not around
She still can hear him say,
she hears him say
"Brandy, you're a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
But my life, my lover, my lady
Is the sea"
"Brandy, you're a fine girl
What a good wife you would be
But my life, my lover, my lady
Is the sea"

2. "Back Streets", The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle, Bruce Springsteen
(Bruce Springsteen)

One soft infested summer
Me and Terry became friends
Trying in vain to breathe
The fire we born in
Catching rides to the outskirts
Tying faith between our teeth
Sleeping in that old abandoned beach house
Getting wasted in the heat
And hiding on the backstreets
Hiding on the backstreets
With a love so hard and filled with defeat
Running for our lives at night on them backstreets

Slow dancing in the dark
On the beach at Stockton's Wing
Where desperate lovers park
We sat with the last of the Duke Street Kings
Huddled in our cars
Waiting for the bells that ring
In the deep heart of the night
We let lose of everything
To go running on the backstreets
Running on the backstreets
Terry you swore we'd live forever
Taking it on them backstreets together

Endless juke joints and Valentino drag
Where famous dancers scraped the tears
Up off the street dressed down in rags
Running into the darkness
Some hurt bad some really dying
At night sometimes it seemed
You could hear the whole damn city crying
Blame it on the lies that killed us
Blame it on the truth that ran us down
You can blame it all on me Terry
It don't matter to me now
When the breakdown hit at midnight
There was nothing left to say
But I hated him
And I hated you when you went away

Laying here in the dark
You're like an angel on my chest
Just another tramp of hearts
Crying tears of faithlessness
Remember all the movies, Terry
We'd go see
Trying to learn to walk like the heroes
We thought we had to be
Well after all this time
To find we're just like all the rest
Stranded in the park
And forced to confess
To hiding on the backstreets
Hiding on the backstreets
Where we swore forever friends
On the backstreets until the end
Hiding on the backstreets
Hiding on the backstreets...

3 One Last Cold Kiss, Flowers of Evil, Mountain, 1973
(Collins, Pappalardi)

The two island swans, mated for their lives
and his faithful heart would not consider any other wife.
For three years' peaceful joy 'midst the rushes of the pond.
Proud and gentle was the loving of the last two island swans.

And their love was like a circle, no beginning and no end
with his lady by his side, a treasure and a best friend.
And the pond was all so peaceful in the rising of the sun
young and free as the island breeze, their lives had just begun.

On a dread day in November when the seering cold did start
stalked the hunter with his bow and put an arrow in her heart.
Husband, come to my side - let your feathers warm my pain
for I fear I shall not share another day with you again.

altAnd the cold winds blow.
altHe was brave but he's laid low
altby her body in the island mist.
altI saw him give her one last cold kiss ... one last cold kiss.

Now of swans the people talk of only one in this day's tide.
Though they brought him twenty ladies, he would take no other bride.
And they say he will not come from the spot where she did fall.
Once so proud, he's beaten now, and he will not speak at all.

4. "Darlin' Be Home Soon" The Lovin' Spoonful
(John Sebastian)
Come and talk of all the things we did today

Here and laugh about our funny little ways

while we have a few minutes to breathe

and I know that it's time you must leave

But darling be home soon

I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled

My darling be home soon

It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I

toddled

For the great relief of having you to talk to

And now a quarter of my life is almost passed

I think I've come to see myself at last

and I see that the time spent confused

was the time that I spent without you

And I feel myself in bloom

Go and beat your crazy head against the sky

try and see beyond the houses and your eyes

It's ok to shoot the moon

But darling be home soon

I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled

My darling be home soon

It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I

toddled

For the great relief of having you to talk to

5. "Fire and Rain," James Taylor (James Taylor) Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone

Susanne the plans they made put an end to you

I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song

I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain

I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end

I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend

But I always thought that I'd see you again

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus

You've got to help me make a stand

You've just got to see me through another day

My body's aching and my time is at hand

And I won't make it any other way

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain

I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end

I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend

But I always thought that I'd see you again

Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun

Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around

Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things

to come

Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain

I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end

I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend

But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now

Thought I'd see you one more time again

There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now

Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now
