Side Effects Listening Party! Nov 13, 2008
Head over to Last.fm now and listen to Reflected Illusions' second album, Side Effects which will be available to purchase on November 20, 2008. You can also download podcast safe mp3s on Last.fm and the PodSafe Music Network.
Reflected Illusions is an experimental project started in 2004 by Toronto-based musician/record producer Rez who's exploring the endless world of electronic music. Rez is a closet prog-rock freak who pushes the boundaries of electronica using his programming skills and weird production tricks that he learned throughout the years he spent in recording studios. Reflected Illusions began as an exploration of progressive electronic, minimal and space music but it changed directions as Rez got more and more obsessed with his first release Psychosis.
Reflected Illusions moves further afield with their second release, Side Effects, which is minimal, trippy and heavily influenced by the musicians of the Berlin School of electronic music. Each track on this album is a one-take improvisation with minor edits and no overdubs.
Psychosis is an unwanted child! I was messing around with a Commodore 64C running Prophet64 and a couple of 8580R5 SIDs. After a few weeks I had sampled the hell outa 8580s and found myself obsessively filtering, re-synthesizing, waveform-editing and re-sampling the original samples. I drove the samples using Evolver's sequencer and a random sequencer in energyXT, programmed the drums, put Audio Damage plug-ins on each and every track, tried to control the chaos with automation and the title track was born! Whenever I wasn't in the mood for working on my other projects, I would get obsessed over my C64 samples. Two years later I realized I have a new obsession and 8 finished songs, love 'em or hate 'em...

As many of you already know, on October 19, Balm will open up for "the Boss" at the House of Blues in Chicago! (7:30 PM) Reaction has been quite enthusiastic to say the least. However the House of Blues is a rather small venue and I want my special friends in the area to be there. So here is the deal: I have reserved 50 free tickets for Zunist! That's right! All you have to do is to show up with your Zune, show it to the bouncers and say, "I'm a friend of Steve's!" They will usher you to several mid-section tables, all expenses paid (peanuts, chips, sodas, fajitas ... all pre-paid). Be sure to show early on the day of the show, because when the 50 are gone that's it! Bruce said, "please open up with So Far Away From Home!" We are gonna' rock the house baby!
