My Song Is Love Unknown: The Road Sessions Vol. 1 introduction The idea for this EP started out simply: to make a record with my touring band while we on the road. My bass player and friend John Davis brought his 4-track cassette portable studio and a microphone, and we took a guerilla-style approach to recording. John could set up his studio in five minutes flat, so when we saw a window of time, we would record wherever we were-- in church sanctuaries, youth rooms, hotels, choir rehearsal spaces, and more. If we wanted to include an instrument that we didn't bring with us, like a piano, well, we'd just have to find one. The result is a lo-fi, raw recording. Most everything was done in one or two takes. There are flat notes, flubs, and other imperfections, along with quite a bit of tape hiss. But it captures a moment in time with a group of musicians who have given themselves to the mystery and beauty of hymns, melodies and words intertwined with the pain and joy of life.
