In a world of musical monotony, Rosy Boa is a welcomed breath of fresh air. Rarely do you see a band that so deftly weaves in and out of intimate moments with such purpose and skill. . . . In his debut album, "Bright Colors," [Funkhouser] ties together various musical sounds to bring about a style all his own.
The album explores many genres, from soulful, genuine ballads like "By Your Side" and "Burnout" to upbeat songs like "Such a Shame" and "Moving to Seattle." Contrasting quirky and delightful songs like "The Body Electric" with eloquent songs reminiscent of [the] gospel tradition like "Lord Have Mercy," Rosy Boa has created a truly diverse compilation of songs. Every tune keeps you interested and enthralled, while the thoughtful lyrics allude to a broader meaning beyond the words.
The style and direction of the album is heightened by tasteful vocal harmonies, choral backup, a folksy feel and guitar licks to make any rock enthusiast of the old school proud. "I was lucky to make friends with some good musicians early on," Funkhouser said about his musical roots. "Everyone's different styles and preferences expanded my musical palette."
This debut album is pleasant to the ears and good for the soul.
