My name is Ryan Bailey. I'm a singer/ songwriter living in Charleston, SC. I love my wife, my daughter, and Jesus. I like recording equipment and Gibson guitars, old t-shirts and cool boots. I often think things are funny that other people don't. I am easily distracted. I make mistakes. I lead worship at a cool church in Charleston, SC, and I play my own music wherever people will listen. Hopefully this is one of those places.

The Best New Album You Haven't Heard Yet...

if you're like me, you've become increasingly jaded by the quality of music being released these days. i'm a BIG fan of albums instead of singles, so i like to buy the whole thing from itunes, not just a couple of songs. i feel like that's the way albums were meant to be heard. i hate dropping 10 bucks on an album just to find out that the other 8 or 9 songs stink, and after about 6 listens i realize that the single, although catchy at first, also stinks. i was about to lose faith entirely until...

believe it or not, Seven Mary Three (that's right, the "Cumbersome" guys from around 1994) have still been creating music all these years. i had heard a couple fo their singles over the past years, and i always dug the ore melodic stuff, but i never could get into the screamy sort of rock songs that made up the other album tracks.

well, thanks to my favorite music blog, "I am Fuel, You are Friends" (you can look it up, i don't have the URL handy), i found out that they were releasing a new album. Well i downloaded the first single, "Last Kiss," and it was great. melodic, lots of good-sounding acoustic guitars, but i figured like their other albums, that the rest of it would fall short of what the one song offered.

So i listened to the itunes 30 second clips, and i heard lots of melodies, and no screaming, so i took a chance. Well, this is the only music i've been listening to for the last two days. there's only one song of the 12 that i'm not really digging, and that one's likely to grow on me.

Here's the sad part, this fantastic album will go completely overlooked, because it will likely never hit the radio or MTV. why? i have no idea. maybe because the singer wasn't on American Idol? he doesn't sport a goatee? he's never been spotted driving with a child on his lap?

In any case, i think that modern radio's emphasis on catchy singles, has left us album lovers up you-know-what creek with no paddle. so i'm begging you, do yourself, and some guys who actually love music and play it for that reason, a favor. go to itunes immediately and download "Day and Nighhtdriving" by Seven Mary Three. if you're reading my blog, you likely have some sense of taste or the last paragraoh would have probably sent you away by now, so i think you'll appreciate this abum. It's literally the best thing i've heard in months.

So go, buy it, support some real artists. Give some hope to people who love real music, and help this band be able to keep doing what their doing. i beg of you. the world needs more bands who are willing to make ALBUMS, not radio singles.

Happy times and things i learned today...

I know he's not some people's cup of tea (or coffee, or beverage of choice), but i've been a fan of Neil Young since high school, and would safely say that he's been a prominent influence on who i am as a writer and musician. Neil's mid-90s taping of MTV Unplugged has been in my list of favorite albums since i bought it in the mid 90's, but i had never, even with the wonder that is YouTube, been able to experience the shw in video form. recently frustrated by this lack of clips on YouTube, i set out to see if the show existed on DVD, and found out that it had only been released on VHS, and that it was now out of print, and somewhat rare.
Well, being the obsessive personality that i am, i immediately set out to find a copy, which i promptly discovered on Amazon Canada for $72.00. No stinkin' way, my friend. So i turned to my trusty ebay, and whaddaya know? i find a copy with a buy it now of 17 bucks. So i promptly click my mouse and plop down 20 bucks for a used VHS tape, hoping it will work when i get it. I recieved it yesterday, watched it, and I am quite the happy camper. The show was amazing, the arrangements are fantastic, and i finally got to experience the entire show, not just the audio.
I am, however, concerned about the longevity of a used VHS tape, so my question is now, does anyone have a DVD recorder that would like to transfer the concert for me?

Now on to things i learned today:

Today i paticipated in one of my favorite pasttimes, guitar shopping with friends (mind you i have no money to buy, it's just fun to look). Here are some things I learned:

I reaffirmed my hypothesis that Gibson acoustics are the best acoustics in existence, at least for my playing style (I hope to add a j-45 to my collection soon).

I still have played only one Martin guitar that has floated my proverbial boat.

Jason really likes U2 (okay, so like anybody's shocked about that one).

I really shouldn't try out expensive guitars unless i realistically have the prospect of affording them. (would anybody be interested in blessing a certain worship leader with a Gretsch Country Gentleman?)

12 strings make me want to sing Tom Petty songs...at full volume...in the acoustic room at the large corporate conglomerate of a music store that shall remain nameless.

I kinda like writing these things. i'm thinking about maybe starting a blog apart from myspace. What do you guys think? Would people actually be interested enough to go and read my thoughts?

Because I like to talk about it...

...and because it's late, and i've been too busy to do anything even remotely creative lately and it's driving me crazy, i'm going to write about the gear that I use. Maybe some of you care, probably a lot of you don't, but you'll get over it.

Lets talk about acoustic guitars. My main acoustic, for writing, recording, live playing, etc. is my gibson Hummingbird. I've bought and sold a lot of guitars. I'm pretty sure this one's a keeper for good. It just rocks. It obviously looks cool, and the mahogany back and sides suit my playing perfectly. It's the guitar in my profile pic.

I also have a Breedlove custom shop SD-20R with rosewood back and sides. Please do not confuse this with the import models you see at Guitar Center. This one was made in the US and has a number of cool custom features. I like this guitar a lot, and it looks really cool, records well, and sounds especially good when recording fingerstyle, but lately i've been thinking maybe it doesn't suit my style as well as i'd like, so maybe i'll sell it. if you're interestested, let me know.

Lets move on to electrics: My main electric-Gibson Firebird (apparently i like guitars with bird names, and even my Breedlove has swan inlays on the 12th fret). I will be forever indebted to Michael at Ye Olde Music for giving me a stupidly good deal on this guitar, or i would have never been able to buy it. This guitar can play pretty much anything and work tone-wise. I'v never had an electric that was so versatile.

My next most-used electric is an old 80's Japanese Fender Telecaster. This was a gift from my dad on the day Eva was born, so it means a lot to me, and if anyone ever took it i would hunt them down and reign blows upon their head. It looks and feels great because it's nice and beat up, the way an old Fender should be.

I normally wouldn't even bother mentioning the cheaper guitars, but I also have an epiphone dot that i used on a retreat I was leading worship at last week because i didn;t have room to pack the firebird, and i have to say the epiphone surprised me with how great it actually sounded for rhythm. Very tom petty-ish. I liked it.

I also have a couple of mexican srats that i would put up against an american strat in terms of playability any day. One of these was also a gift. Tecently the gifter borrowed it back, and i am awaiing its return...ahem...cough...cough...

Amp: Vox AC30. Best amp ever made, ever. period. end of discussion. I have one of the new reissues. For anyone who says that's not as cool as a vintage one, I say it sounds just as good (better even at non-arena volumes) as an old one and i don't have to carry a fire extinguisher with me to gigs. Get off your high horse and be practical.

Pedals: ah, the never-ending quest for tones and sounds.

Analogman Comprossor: my favorite pedal. Father's day gift from Meghan. Makes everythoing in my chain sound better. Never will get rid of it.

Dunlop Crybaby Wah: Cheap but awesome, and i found a sweet white one on ebay.

Ernie Ball Volume: Weighs as much as my other pedals combined, but i like the way it feels. Never used a volume pedal until about a year ago. Don't know how i played that long without one.

Ibanez TS-9: I keep selling these and buying them again. I think i'll hang on to this one. they just rock.

Divided by 13 Joyride: On loan from Matt. I'm hoping he'll forget i have it.

Boss TR-2 tremolo: The effect itself rocks. The effect it has on my tone sucks. I think i'm going to have Keeley mod it so it will only rock and not suck. It's the first thing my wife ever bought off ebay back when we were engaged for my birthday, and for that reason i will never sell it.

Delays: Two Boss DD-5s and one Boss DD-6. I like delays. I have several so i can switch them quickly. I won;t tell you my secret to doing this easily. Also, i would like to sell the DD-6 and get a DD-20. Again, if you're interested...

I also have two Boss TU-2 tuners. Best investments a player can make.

For recording, I use an Mbox 2 with protools on a macbook. Macs rock. PC's suck. It's a proven fact... by scientists and stuff.

Also, I have an eshenbaugh bass. My friend makes them. He's one of the most talented people i know. His company is in my top friends. Check them out. if you play bass, buy one from him. If you don't play, buy one anyway and learn. They basically play themselves anyway.

Thanks for letting me bore you with this. I like this stuff a lot.

also, i type very poorly using only one finger on my left hand and two on my right, because i faked my way through typing in high school, and i rarely use spellcheck, so i don't know how badly this reads. forgive me.

...and to all a good night.

btw, what do you guys like to use?
