death is not the end of us

if death is the end of us - how do we justify what we do with our lives?
day to day we wake and sleep with no urgency
is this it?
the best life you're ever going to have?
did we get it right with our one chance?

we live like there's forever
and deny believing it
but it's still there - we know it is

look at you, reaching for hope
'everything will be ok'
some sense of divine justice from a universe we claim has no rhyme
'it's all for the best' and 'everything happens for a reason'
but meaning is so foreign if we're a temporary reality
we hold on to a claim of entitlement with no justification

"i want to make a difference"
"i want to grow"
"i want to love"

but why?
where does that leave us?

either something went wrong;
and we're not meant to be as conscious as we are while being as finite as we are
we're not meant to be so full of meaning, hope and morality while being terrified (but also certain) of death and insignificance
or there is something more
some forever which we're all reaching for
some meaning
some reason

i'm going to take a shot and say that when we look at the sky and we're in awe of its beauty that isn't an end in itself
that isn't enough to justify my 'being alive'
but somewhere in the fact that i have faculties for appreciation of beauty says that i'm meant for something more
something more than an eighty year stint on a sphere of rock
and then to spend the rest of time not existing and being forgotten

death is not the end of us
